Introduction

Reading is an important habit that every person should incorporate in their life. When you read, you have the chance to escape from your everyday tensions and reel in a sense of calm. But more often than not, we end up leaving a book incomplete, owing to not having enough time, or patience. Continuing with this practice will only cause us to not finish any book, and be forced to move to another one.

But that can now change, for good! You will have the chance to finish a book, and in express time! You can easily finish more than 30 books a month and increase your knowledge base. But in order to do that, you have to learn to speed read.

Speed-reading is the process of reading fast and finishing a book in express time. In order to undertake it, you have to understand how speed-reading works and practice it.

Through the course of this book, we will look at how you can speed read, and take it up as a daily activity.

You will also be able to assess your current reading speed and know exactly how you can increase it. The book is split into simple chapters and you will be able to navigate through them with ease.

I thank you for choosing this book and hope you have a good time reading it.

Let us begin.

Chapter 1: What is Speed-Reading?

Speed-reading is a reading technique where the reader goes through a certain text at an elevated speed. As you know, doing things slowly is never a good idea. Be it in your personal life or professional, you have to try and do things as fast as possible in order to make the most of your time and effort.

That aspect of speed is especially pertinent in this day and age where productivity is of utmost importance to anyone and everyone. But you have to understand that speed is not always a good thing. If you are trying to speed things up and compromising on the quality then that is pretty useless. You have to strive to strike a balance between quality and speed and only then will your mission succeed.

In this first chapter of the book, we will understand what speed-reading refers to and you will also have the chance to assess your current reading speed.

Speed-reading, as was mentioned before, refers to reading a text at a fast speed. As you know, all of us have a certain speed at which we read a text. This speed depends on many factors including our old habits, how fast our minds work etc.

Assess your current speed

The first task for you is to assess your current reading speed. Here are the steps that you should follow in order to assess your reading speed.

  1. Start by choosing a book to read.
  2. Now use a timer or stopwatch and set 1-minute time.
  3. Now as soon as the timer starts, you have to start reading from the book.
  4. You should not be distracted and keep reading until the timer goes off.
  5. You have to immediately stop even if you have not completed a sentence; place your finger on the word that you read last.
  6. Now start counting the number of lines that you have read in the 1-minute.
  7. Next, count the number of words that you have read in the text. It should include all the words including the small ones.
  8. Now multiply the number of lines that you read with the words per line.
  9. The number of words that you get is what are your words per minute.
  10. Now you have to keep checking your words per minute on a weekly basis in order to check your progress.

You have to write down your speed in a book or a journal and look at it from time to time.

Chapter 2: Why is Speed-Reading Important?

Speed-reading is a great activity that anybody can take up and improve their reading speed. In this chapter we will look at why speed-reading is an important activity of life.

The power of knowledge

First and foremost, let us address the most important advantage of speed learning. You will have the chance to exploit the power of knowledge. You will be able to use your knowledge to your advantage and conduct day-to-day activities. You will become the most popular person in your group, as you will be able to contribute your view on a range of topics. You will be able to lead a better life just by increasing your basic knowledge on a host of topics. With speed-reading you will be able to increase your knowledge as you can read more books within the same amount of time.
