Introduction
This book is intended as an introductory text for students taking courses in philosophy that deal, either in whole or in part, with topics in the philosophy of religion. Its aim is to introduce the reader, through a series of stimulating and probing dialogues, to some of the key questions frequently raised about religious belief: Is there a God? What is God like? Why does God allow evil? Are human beings immortal? Does one have to be religious in order to be moral? and so on. Our choice of the dialogue style, rather than the more traditional monologue style employed in most textbooks dealing with these issues, emerged naturally from our teaching of the subject matter of this book over several years. We have discovered that this mode of presentation is advantageous, not just because it allows us to present the material in a more appealing and engaging way for the student, but also because it allows one to capture more accurately the typical student's attitudes and questions concerning religious belief.
Thus, our format allows us to compare and contrast important themes throughout the dialogues (such as the relationship between religion and science, for example); to interject with observations, insights, questions, and objections; to introduce related, but tangential, points, instead of relegating them to another time; and to cross-reference with other topics, arguments, and insights. More generally, the use of dialogue allows us to produce a comprehensive synthesis of the main themes and prevents the material from becoming unwieldy or disjointed. This gives the dialogue form an advantage over the monologue style, which is undoubtedly one reason philosophical dialogues have become more popular in recent years.
Our method also has the distinct advantage of communicating in an interesting and realistic way a sense of the value and importance of philosophy itself. Throughout the dialogues one cannot fail to see the contribution that philosophical reflectionwith its

emphasis on ordinary experiences, rationality, consistency, and knowledge of the history of ideascan bring to one's reflection on one's most cherished beliefs, whether religious or not. The dialogues illustrate that philosophy is not simply a scholarly endeavor, nor is it an abstract game; rather, it is a discipline that, in terms of its content and methodology, stimulates and cultivates intellectual thinking about important questions and problems in a systematic, thorough, rigorous, and historically informed way. In this way, we hope to illustrate that philosophical reflection is an activity of which everyone is capable, and that can make a contribution to everyone's understanding of the central questions of human experience.
