Dear Reader,
You hold in your hands the last book on which my father, Dr. D. James Kennedy, and his coauthor, Jerry Newcombe, collaborated before my dad passed away in September 2007.
The Presence of a Hidden God is a fitting finale to the nearly seventy books my father wrote or coauthored during his lifetime. He believed that Christianity is a reasonable faith and diligently studied the Scriptures as well as history, law, and science to equip him and others with evidence for the existence of God and the claims of Christianity.
That evidencesome of which he presents in this bookis compelling. In this, his last book, he shows how God makes Himself known to all of us, both in the world and in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ.
The Presence of a Hidden God answers objections to God put forward by doubters and skeptics. One thing about my fatherhe never shied away from honest objections. In fact, he loved to take on those kinds of questions.
I recall one evening when he visited in the home of a couple who were both well-educated professionals. He had the opportunity to respond to a long list of objections that they put to him. It grew very late. My father at one point took off his sport coat and rolled up his shirt sleeves to demonstrate his readiness to go the entire night if need be to satisfy their doubts. Finally, after their many questions had all been met with solid answerslike those given in this bookthey bowed their heads to invite Christ to be their Lord and Savior.
I can say with confidence, both from my own experience in telling others about Jesus and from watching my father gently and convincingly answer objections, that Christianity is a reasonable faith. God makes Himself known, and He offers evidence for His existence.
I hope you will find comfort and fresh confidence in your own faith as you discover how God reveals Himself to man in this book. For my father, God is no longer hidden. For him, faith has now become glorious sight. But for us here below, he has left behind a powerful witness to help us see how God shows Himself in nature and in His Son.
Sincerely in Christ,

The Presence of a Hidden God
This book demonstrates the rational coherence of the Christian faith. Atheism, which is supposedly based on reason, is shown to be inherently irrational. Only Christianity meets both the intellectual and intuitive longings of the human soul. Yes, the hidden God is present among us.

and Slandering Jesus
There are only two ways that we can know something: rational thought or revelation. When it comes to knowing God, history shows the first option is untrustworthy, as countless rational thinkers have asserted views of various gods that are either contradictory or irreconcilable. That leaves us with revelation, where God Himself chooses to reveal things hidden to our finite minds. This is the persuasive case made by D. James Kennedy and Jerry Newcombe in their excellent work The Presence of a Hidden God. With compelling narrative and excellent scholarship, they detail a revelation of God that is both awe inspiring and trustworthy. If you desire to make God known to those for whom He remains hidden, this is the book for you.

The Presence of a Hidden God is a must-read and must-give-to-everyone book. It is the best book published in many years that presents the truth of God and Jesus Christ to unbelievers. The book takes off with insight and memorable stories that capture both mind and heart. I will quote The Presence of a Hidden God for years to come. I was moved to tears several times. I laughed out loud. This is the great evangelist Dr. D. James Kennedys magnum opus due to the superb coauthoring of Jerry Newcombe. My suggestion is read it and be transformed!

This, the final Kennedy-Newcombe book after twelve others, is probably their finest. It serves as a fitting capstone for Dr. Kennedys extraordinary ministry, taking on the greatest theme that ever could beGod Himselfand with brilliant logic and shimmering illustrations proves not only His existence but how very threadbare are the arguments of todays resurgent atheists. But more, these pages also answer questions even the faithful may ask: Why does God seem hidden at times? Why does He permit evil? This book, defying the detractors and firming up the faithful, should be required reading to meet the challenges facing todays Christian.

Truly You are God, who hide Yourself,
O God of Israel, the Savior!
I SAIAH 45:15
I s God hidden?
To hear skeptics speak, you would think so. One of the most famous nonbelievers of the twentieth century was the British philosopher and mathematician Bertrand Russell. Well known for his skeptical stance, he even wrote a book titled Why I Am Not a Christian. Reportedly, when he was at deaths door, he was asked about his readiness to die; what if it turned out there was a God after all?
In that case, Russell replied, he would ask the Almighty this question: Why didnt You give us more evidence?
His reaction prompted this comment from author and science teacher Ken Poppe:
[Russell] seems to be positioning himself in case he needs to shift the blame of his disbelief to God for not being more convincing. (Hmmm. Did he never see a bright full moon setting in the cool, blue western sky, while the sun rose circular and red through the eastern clouds? Did he never hold a newborn baby?)
Whos correct: Russell or Poppe?
Indeed, is God hidden? Some people think so, but the problem lies with them, not with Him. To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled (Titus 1:15). To the righteous, God is clearly there. To the unrighteous, God is absentor worse, if Hes there at all, He is cruel.
God is not really hidden; He just appears so to those who dont know Him. Yet even believers sometimes feel that He hides His face and seems absent when we need Him most.
Blaise Pascal put it this way: What can be seen on earth indicates neither the total absence of God nor his manifest presence, but rather the presence of a hidden God. Likewise the classic hymn Holy, Holy, Holy reminds us that the darkness may seem to hide God:
Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide Thee,
Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see;
Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee;
Perfect in power, in love, and purity.
The eye of sinful man is unable to perceive the Lord or His glory. In other words, to a blind man God may seem hidden, but to those whose eyes He has opened, He isnt hidden at all. He has clearly revealed Himself in Jesus Christ.
In every language, every tribe, and every culture, we find a word for God. He has not left Himself without a witness, nor is there anywhere on earth where His fingerprints are absent.
