The ongoing debate over abortion serves as a clear indication that the Supreme Court decision of 1973 did little to settle the question of abortions legitimacy. If anything, in fact, the debate has grown, with more strident voices and, in some cases, more violent dimensions than ever before. On both sides, the debate has been dominated by passionate but not always rational arguments. It seems as thought there are no tame opinions about abortion in this country, that public policy is the product of slogans, sound bites, and placards, instead of principled argument. By presenting the balanced, rational argument for the Catholic position on this highly charged subject, Abortion and Public Policy makes a major contribution to public policy discourse in our pluralistic society. R. Randall Rainey, S.J., LL.M., is Senior Fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University. Gerard Magill Ph.D., is Chair of the Department of Health Care Ethics and Director of the interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Health Care Ethics at Saint Louis University.

Preface
Any observer of the social scene in America will acknowledge that abortion is a hotly contested issue. Although the 1973 decision of the United States Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade constitutionalized the right of abortion and legalized the act of abortion throughout pregnancy, the public controversy concerning abortion has intensified rather than diminished during the last two decades. Contrary to the New York Times editorial on January 24, 1973, the Supreme Court's decision did not provide "a sound foundation for final and reasonable resolution of a debate that has divide America too long." The dispute concerning the morality of legalized abortion has continued unabated not only in legislative chambers and university lecture halls, but also in our workplaces and in the streets of our cities. Unfortunately, this protracted debate or principled argument, call it what you will, too often has not been carried on at the level of productive interchange. Slogans, sound bytes, and placards have been the media for social exchange aimed at forming public policy. Discerning the public good in such an environment is exceedingly difficult.
Saint Louis University committed its institutional resources to facilitate that discernment of the public good. The conference on Abortion and Public Policy: An Interdisciplinary Investigation within the Catholic Tradition (March 11-13, 1993) was convened to that end and to provide a rigorous exposition of the complex issues surrounding abortion through the medium of interdisciplinary academic discourse within the Catholic tradition.
As members of a Jesuit university, the Conference Planning Committee desired to explore the rational basis of the moral teaching of the magisterium of the Church on this subject. And as citizens in a democratic society, the Committee also was aware of the need to present to a pluralistic society a more comprehensive explanation of that teaching. In seeking a nuanced and research-oriented interchange on the topic,
