WHEN I WAS twelve years old, devouring three cinnamon rolls for my after-school snack and worrying incessantly about the size of my thighs, my mother put me on a diet. I gained five pounds immediately.

Dieting made me hungrier!

That experience fueled my interest in nutrition. Enough so that when a physician erroneously told me in my early twenties that I couldnt have kids, I turned to find my lifes purpose in promoting health through good nutrition. Plus, I thought that knowing more about nutrition might just solve my own struggles with food and weight. So I went to graduate school in nutrition science, but even after that experience, my own issues with food didnt magically disappear. Part of me was still that little girl who craved cinnamon rolls and had terrible things to say about her thighs. Knowledge was clearly not the answer.

As fate would have it, a position in adolescent medicine on the faculty at UCSF enabled me to train in other disciplines and gave me the clinical experience and intellectual nourishment to reflect on the true roots of weight and eating problems. Many people Charlie Irwin, Carl Greenberg, Vilia Frost, Susan Johnson, Marion Nestle, Marna Cohen, Mary Crittenden, and many othersguided my learning. I applied these ideas to treating adolescent obesity and developed The Shapedown Program, which launched in 1979. At the time, the program was not all that different from most family-based diet, exercise, and behavioral programs. The results were similar, too. There were always one or two star pupils in every group, but how did the rest do? Not all that well. I knew that there was a missing link in weight control but I didnt know what it was.
