Foreword
Dr. Fetterman presents an intelligent, far-ranging approach to excellence and equality. He covers much ground in this unique treatment of issues in the identification and facilitation of talented youths, especially those who excel intellectually. As an anthropologist and educationalist, he considers them at local, state, national, and international levels. Especially valuable is his detailed discussion of "elitism," democracy "versus" excellence, and self-fulfillment "versus" the technological future of the United States.
Dr. Fetterman's work highlights many of the problems facing the education of gifted and talented persons. In his opinion, "most serious obstacles include hostility and complacency toward the gifted, resulting in educational neglect." To him, "educational neglect is a silent time bomb threatening the quality of life for us all."
