Preface
A midlife crisis, like an acute neurosis, is characterized by conflict, depression and anxiety.
Contrary to the popular belief that such symptoms are unproductive indications of illness, C.G. Jung's view was that they are attempts at self-curemanifestations of a basically healthy psyche trying to find a proper balance.
"The moment of the outbreak of neurosis is not just a matter of chance," writes Jung. "As a rule it is most critical. It is usually the moment when a new psychological adjustment, that is, a new adaptation, is demanded."1
