Hit the trail for a dramatic look at Wisconsins geologic past.
The impressive bluffs, valleys, waterfalls, and lakes of Wisconsins state parks provide more than beautiful scenery and recreational opportunities. They are windows into the distant past, offering clues to the dramatic events that have shaped the land over billions of years.
Author and former DNR journalist Scott Spoolman takes readers with him to twenty-eight parks, forests, and natural areas where evidence of the states striking geologic and natural history are on display. In an accessible storytelling style, Spoolman sheds light on the volcanoes that poured deep layers of lava rock over a vast area in the northwest, the glacial masses that flattened and molded the landscape of northern and eastern Wisconsin, mountain ranges that rose up and wore away over hundreds of millions of years, and many other bedrock-shaping phenomena. These stories connect geologic processes to the current landscape, as well as to the evolution of flora and fauna and development of human settlement and activities, for a deeper understanding of our states natural history.
The book includes a selection of detailed trail guides for each park, which hikers can take with them on the trail to view evidence of Wisconsins geologic and natural history for themselves.

This book is dedicated to my parents, Art and Betty Spoolman, who cherished hunting for blueberries, wildflowers, and waterfalls, and who taught us to love Wisconsins natural beauty as much as they did.

I f you could view Wisconsin from outer space on a sunny, clear day, it might look something like a relief map, with areas of rough terrain in brown and gray, smoother green expanses, rambling river valleys and their tributaries, and blue lakes scattered across the state and bordering its north and east sides. These varied landscapes can be traced to the complex geologic story of the state, which in fact is not just one story but several. Wisconsins state parks make perfect entry points to these stories, as places where visitors can see the variety of land formations and other evidence of billions of years of geologic and natural history.

This book is organized geographically, starting in the northwest corner of the state and finishing in Door County. This order of presentation conforms with the states geologic story to some extent. The northwest corner of Wisconsin is underlain by one-billion-year-old volcanic rock that is exposed in many places. On much of the eastern side of the state, Wisconsins youngest bedrock lies at the surface, and that side of the state was greatly affected by the glaciers, which were the most recent geologic events.
