Acknowledgments
The subject of forgeries has, of necessity, fascinated me for the more than three decades that I have been a dealer in historical letters and documents. Mary Benjamin, the first dealer from whom I bought material, set a high standard in authenticating material, and her expertise gave me, a new collector, great confidence. During the past thirty years, my friend, Charles Hamilton, has frequently entertained me with stories of his personal encounters with forgers. Many of them are recounted in his excellent book, Famous Forgers.
The original draft of the present book was reviewed by six friends and colleagues, each with a somewhat different perspective. I am very grateful for their comments and help: Terry Belanger, Roy Davids, Rosalie Fawcett, Charles Hamilton, Shirley McNerney, and Marvin Sadik.
The forgeries illustrated are from my personal collection of forgeries, unless otherwise noted; the photographs showing enlargements of letters and other writing characteristics were taken by Rosalie Fawcett using the microscope camera illustrated in the chapter on equipment.

Introduction
Virtually since the beginning of writing, people have been trying to affect our knowledge of current events, our history, and our literature by forging the principal means by which such information is conveyed to us letters, manuscripts, documents, and diaries. The written word, even in this modern era of video, telephone and satellite communication, is the basis of much of today's news, and hence tomorrow's history. The forging of manuscript material has most commonly been done to change history rather than for financial gain.
The most famous modern forgery cases, most notably the Hitler diaries, have contained elements of both: efforts to change history and swindle money. This book will discuss many of the forgeries created primarily for the purpose of changing history, but it is principally about the forging of documents for financial gain. The latter have generally been the far more sophisticated forgeries, in which the forger has combined research of the texts of the manuscripts with the use of scientific knowledge and extraordinary skill in their physical creation. The former have been the more sophisticated hoaxes involving elaborate provenance and situations wherein the victims of the forgeries end up playing an important role as the proponents of the forgeries and frauds.
