INTRODUCTION
The whys and why nots of school surveys
Why survey?
The worlds great political leaders have understood that nothing succeeds without the support of public opinion. Thats reason one for conducting surveys.
Today -- more than ever -- the perception is the reality. What people think is what they believe and know for a fact! If people think you deserve support, youll get support. And, if they dont, you wont.
The ultimate court in our society is the court of public opinion. It is where the final judgments are made by the people who will support or oppose, favor or disfavor, like or dislike, want or not want.
Reason two for conducting surveys and audits is that they are methods of analyzing various populations, and analysis is the first -- and most critical -- step in every communication-related process, whether it be the process of public relations, promotion, or marketing.
Effective communication involves sending and receiving. And, wise communicators know that they often learn more from receiving than sending.
Surveys give you the lay of the land. They can help you determine the stability of your system and the probability of success for your proposals.

Here are a dozen reasons you might want to conduct a survey:
- To find out how effectively youre communicating. Do people really feel well informed about your schools? Where do they get their information? What information sources do they trust/not trust? What thoughts do they have for improving communication?
