A delightful book that encourages gardeners to pay closer attention to the subtle beauty of miniature landscapes and introduces one of the glories of Japanese gardens into American designs. The author writes entertainingly of mosses on rocks and walls, in containers, and as a lush ground cover, and he presents a gallery of his favorite moss species.

Preface
A preface is needed, please supply. It is your introduction to the book, briefly describing its origin, scope, and interest. Who would be interested in this book? Why would it be of interest to him or her? How did it come about? Toot your own horn a little. Why should the reader look to what you say as a dependable source of information and observations on the topic?
The above exhortation arrived as a note from the publisher of this book. My reply to Timber Press and to you is this: In the first chapter, As One Moss Gardener to Another, I have probably answered those queries, although not so directly as they have been asked, and I have certainly answered others that I myself have posed.
Chapter 1 has much to say that is of vital assistance toward a fuller understanding of almost everything that follows. And I will own up that in writing the chapter I also had in mind soft and sneaky salesmanship. Since I have been asked for something more direct, and can see the need, here goes: What qualifies this book as being worth your time and money? Well, it is a thoroughgoing treatise on its subject. It tells almost as much about the mechanics of moss gardening as the Kama Sutra does about dancing. Like that book, this work of mine may offer more variations on the theme than you really care to know. But I discuss the many aspects of moss gar-

dening under separate chapters, so you can select those that you want to read about and follow.
Yet the book serves as far more than a manual on planting and maintaining moss. Moss Gardening is also a landscaper's book, the first in English, and perhaps in any language, to outline landscape gardening with mosses and others among the tiniest of ornamentals, toward effects that may not be tiny, that may be grand, even scenic. In this book a planting of moss is never presented as an isolated garden feature but always as an integral part of a garden community that may include trees, shrubs, shrublets, and perennial flowers. There is more. The book even describes how to garden delightfully with mosses by not putting a hand in the enterprise at all: one does it with eyes only. If you decide on such ocular gardening, the book can be enjoyed as the ultimate word on no-work gardening. Or if you are a seeker of light exercise while gardening, this book will show you ways to garden lightly. Or again,
