Acknowledgments
Few books are solely the property of one person, and this one is certainly no exception. More state and provincial fisheries department professionals than I can mention, from across the smallmouth's range, contributed their knowledge of smallmouth bass and their habits. Likewise, I must acknowledge the input of the many smallmouth anglers whose experiences I have shared over the years. In particular, I want to acknowledge several individuals whose ideas contributed significantly to the book. A sincere thank-you to Smallmouth Alliance organizer Kurt Sleighter, to float-fishing expert Sheldon Bolstad, and to longtime smallmouth addict and good friend Dan Johnson. Another acknowledgment to outdoor writer and fly-fishing expert Greg Breining. Most of all I want to thank Lyn, my partner in life's adventures; her patience, support, and editing skills are truly enormous.

Introduction
Over the years, I have often wondered why so many fishing writers, and even many anglers themselves, have overlooked stream smallmouth bass fishing. This continued neglect seems particularly odd considering the rise in popularity of the smallmouth nationally over the past decade. But in significant areas of the smallmouth's range, fishing in rivers and creeks is still largely overlooked. If any outdoor writers do mention stream bass fishing, they lump all rivers together, no matter how different. Many anglers also seem unaware of stream fishing, even though this tremendous fisheries resource encompasses well over 25,000 stream miles from New Brunswick to Arkansas, many times almost under our noses.
Stream fishing is very different from the increasingly technological and mechanized (and crowded) lake angling of today. You don't have to journey to remote Canadian waters or fight the crowds on a big-name lake to find the "gamest fish that swims," as J. A. Henshall, one of the pioneers of American angling, called the smallmouth. Even if many of the pros are busy zooming across Lake Erie or Dale Hollow Reservoir, I believe it's time to discover our continent's stream smallmouth. That's what this book is all about. It gives you solid advice on tactics and techniques to find and catch stream bass (and other stream species). This book is directed completely toward stream fishing and is based on many years of stream-fishing experience.
