Preface
I am a latecomer to the writing of Walker Percy. I was first introduced to his work by reading Lost in the Cosmos rather than The Moviegoer. For some time I had been interested in language theory and literary linguistics and had, by coincidence, also been reading a fair amount of fiction by writers of the twentieth-century South. Yet I had somehow not read one word of Percy. Because of Percy's interest in semiotics, a professor suggested that Lost in the Cosmos might provide an interesting connection between my studies in rhetorical theory and southern literature. He was right, but the reading did much more than that. For a young student whose graduate studies had induced something just short of hysteria, Will Barrett's confused wanderings and delusions of "ravenous particles" that cloud his vision were enough to pull me completely into Percy's world.
