This volume is the fifth in a series of analyses of elections in the South beginning in 1984 and continuing in 1988, 1992, and 1996. While the presidential election has been the focus of each volume, other important aspects of contemporary southern electoral politics have also been addressed, including congressional and state elections as well as the overall status of party development and competition in each southern state. This volume continues the general organizational plan of the previous publications, including an introductory chapter, a chapter on presidential primaries, a chapter on issues in the 2000 presidential election, a chapter on religion and southern politics, as well as chapters on each southern state and a conclusion summarizing lessons from the 2000 election cycle.
All volumes in this now-live-volume series have been published by Praeger, and we are grateful for their continuing interest in the politics of the South and for their willingness to continue the series.
We are also appreciative of the support of those who have made this book possible or who have contributed to the atmosphere in which this work was created. The Citadel Foundation provided indispensable financial support not only for this volume but also for The Citadel Symposium on Southern Politics, a biennial conference which for over two decades has brought together a community of scholars engaged in the study of southern politics and which has, in the process, helped to develop the network of contributors involved in this study. Dr. Harrison Carter, The Citadels provost, has offered consistent support for faculty research and publication, and he has helped to sustain the environment in which a work such as this can be developed. Major General John S.Grinalds, USMC (ret.), The Citadels president, takes every opportunity to support (and praise) faculty scholarship, and for this we are appreciative.
