Divide length between perpendiculars into 756 parts. From forward perpendicular to foremast = 192 parts; foremast to mainmast = 258 parts. Masts rake to inch to foot.

Hoist of sails = 2 times the beam.

Foot of foresail= 336 parts.

Foot of mainsail = 408 parts.

One half the foot of mainsail = length for both fore and main gaffs.

Foot of jibs = 348 parts.

This applies to fast sailing coasting vessels, but wide flat centerboard schooners have greater sails.

UNITED STATES SPARRING SYSTEM, OF 1840, FOR SLOOPS

Hoist of mainsail = 2 beams.

Foot of mainsail = 3 beams + depth of hold.

After leech of mainsail = 3 beams + 3 times the depth of hold.

Jibstay the same length as after leech of mainsail.

After leech of jib same as hoist of mainsail.

Gaff = beam + 3 times the depth of hold.

Foot of jib same as after leech of jib.

Mast of the sloops beam from forward part of the deck and to rake aft inch to the foot.

For masting brigs the foremast is put Picture 6 of the vessels length from forward perpendicular; mainmast or the distance from foremast to after perpendicular.

UNITED STATES SPARRING SYSTEM, OF 1840, FOR SHIPS

Divide length between perpendiculars into 760 parts. From forward perpendicular to foremast = 150 parts; foremast to mainmast = 264 parts; mainmast to mizzenmast = 211 parts mizzenmast to after perpendicular = 135 parts. This gives you the spacing of the masts fore and aft on the ship.

Mizzenmast = Picture 9 of the mainmast.

Maintopmast = Picture 10 of the mainmast.

Main-topgallant mast = Picture 11 of the main topmast.
