Loss of mobility is one of the major challenges of aging.
This can be due to disease or accident. More often it results from a life-time of poor movement habits. I see this every time I watch crowds of older adults. Struggling to simply walk around. This ebook-based training program, designed to improve aging mobility, is derived from years of personal experience of body movement work and athletics.
Its effectiveness is demonstrated by my ability to continue to enjoy Ironman training in my seventies.
The ebook is linked to carefully selected, online instructional videos, and other valuable material for improved body awareness.
Body meditation for optimal movement is not about physical exercise. It is not about making strenuous efforts. Its about awakening your body-awareness. Its about learning to quietly listen to your body.
Body meditation is about learning to listen to the power of silence.
Modern technology has not helped with this listening process, You need no tools, apart from patience and quiet, to carry out these simple, and insightful, exercises.
Designed to take you back to the ease of movement you enjoyed as a youngster.
My body-awareness journey started over 30 years ago. I was studying the Bruce Lee fighting style, Jeet Kune Do. The underlying philosophy of this martial art was simple:
Adapt what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is specifically your own.
I applied this philosophy during the development of the Body Meditation Course.
Body-awareness training saved my life in 2010. It contributed to my self-diagnosis of a large abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). I was treated with an AAA stent graft. Thus the name of my blog, Athlete With Stent.
Body-awareness training also carried me all the way to the Boston Marathon, in 2009! As I started to run distance, for Ironman in my late 50s, I had lots of problems running-induced injuries! Three knee surgeries woke me up. It was time to change the way I moved. To stop injuring myself.
I studied different running styles, and changed to a low-impact approach. With this new running style, and Feldenkrais training to cure a knee issue, I proceeded to qualify for this most widely known of all marathons. It was a blast. It was all due to simple changes in the way I moved.
The success of Feldenkrais, led me to study other body movement techniques, with great instructors.
The body-awareness training methods, that permitted me to create this course, have included Yoga (2 years), Pilates (1 year), Gyrokinesis (1 year), weight training (10 years), Feldenkrais (5 years) and Continuum (2 years). Each one added new skills to my body movement inventory.
What is Body Meditation? Its a carefully selected set of easy exercises, designed to awaken your sense of body-awareness. To help you learn to listen more carefully!
The changes are easy to make, and easy to apply, once you open your mind to the power of this simple method. You can do them anywhere. In the grocery line or waiting at a stop light! They rapidly become a valuable part of your life!

I was meeting a friend for lunch, the other day! A good friend, of many years, same age as myself. As I approached our table, where my friend was already sitting, he said, Kevin, I can always spot you in a crowd. You dont walk normally! I sensed that his was a veiled criticism. Im weird! He continued, When you walk, you swing your shoulders back and forth. For balance, I guess? Why dont you walk like other people?
The simple matter is, I do walk normally. As my body intended. Like a kid. Im a life-long athlete. I study optimal movement, in order to continue enjoying Ironman races, in my 70s. Ironman comprises a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and a full, 26.2-mile marathon. All in one day! Better move optimally, or youll never make it, at my age.
Wishing you easy movement and happy trails,
Kevin Morgan aka FitOldDog.

Introduction
What is meditation?
For me, personally, meditation is the act of quieting the chatter in my head. Just observing the chatter will calm my mind, and eventually silence the mental noise. This allows me to hear messages (insights) from my subconscious, from time-to-time, and to be in the moment. For some reason, when I do this, I feel more alive. More present in the world of sights, sounds, odors, touch, and yes, body-awareness. Ill often spot a tight muscle, or a warm happy one. Just by sitting, quietly, calming my mind.
Learn to listen!
What is body meditation?
Body meditation is a tool I use to raise my body-awareness. This simple, but powerful, instruction set is not about physical exercise. It's not about making strenuous efforts. It's about awakening your sense of your body. It's about learning to quietly listen to your body. Modern technology has not helped with this listening process, You need no tools, apart from patience, quiet and the willingness to observe or listen to what your body has to say.
Learn to listen!
Loss of mobility is one of the major challenges of aging.
I watch how people move. All the time. Generally, Im saddened by their unnecessary body movement battles. This can be due to disease, accident or the relentless effects of the normal aging process. More often it results from a life-time of poor movement habits. I watch crowds of older adults. Struggling along, for no good reason. Struggling to simply walk around. Many much younger than I.
Compare the movements of older adults to those of children. Freely, racing around, swinging their arms and shoulders. Rushing here! Rushing there! Full of life, vim, vigor AND freedom of movement!
Why do we lose our freedom of movement?
Shoes - we put our feet in prisons. Most of the time, a simple protective layer, on the bottom of our feet, to save us from cuts and bruises, will do the trick. But no! The shoe industry has coaxed our children into excessively supportive orthotic shoes, and made a fortune doing it.
Think about it, and choose shoes wisely!
What other people think - its human nature to follow along with the rest of the group. This kept us alive during millions of years of evolution. Lose the group, lose your life. Fit in, or perish! That drive to fit in turned into the modern fashion industry, and the way many of us walk. Better not swing your arms, skip, run around like a kid. You wont fit in!
Relevant Vignette!
I was meeting a friend for lunch, the other day! As I approached our table, he said, Kevin, I can always spot you in a crowd. You don't walk normally! I sensed that his was a veiled criticism. Im weird! When you walk, you swing your shoulders back and forth. For balance, I guess? Why dont you walk like other people?
The simple matter is, I do walk normally. 'As my body intended.' Like a kid. Im a life-long athlete. I study optimal movement, in order to continue enjoying Ironman races in my 70s. How I walk is explained in a wonderful book, by Jack Heggie. Running With The Whole Body, in the recommended reading section of this document. I doubt my friend would read it, even if I gave him a copy! People think they know how to walk. How odd! A good friend, though!
Construction Of The Body Meditation Method
I'm sure this document will evolve, with time, as I receive feedback. My goal is to get people moving efficiently, and less painfully. The method is based on lessons I've enjoyed, from many sources. Jack Heggies program requires setting aside up to an hour a day, to do the work. I know, because I completed it twice. It's based on the Feldenkrais Method. One of many movement skills that I really appreciated. In fact, 'Feldenkrais Fixed My Knee, Where Everyone Else Failed!'
Whats different about this Body Meditation Approach? Its comprised of lessons learned from many sources. This includes studies of martial arts, specifically Jeet Kune Do and Wing Chun, plus years of Yoga, Pilates, Feldenkrais, and Continuum. All wrapped in with the ideas expressed in that wonderful little book, The 3-Minute Meditator! (see recommended reading list).
I also incorporated lessons from years of different sports, from water-polo to marathons. Most of the really valuable lessons were derived from injuries I sustained. Most of these issues were self-induced, due to over-training or poor body movement skills. I want to save you from going down that road, as best I can.
We learn more from our failures than from our successes Plenty of great - photo 2
We learn more from our failures, than from our successes!
Plenty of great lessons, here!
In fact, a running injury led me by the nose (well, the knee), into the wonderful world of Feldenkrais, as explained in the blog post referred to above.
