Now, How About YOU?
introduction
A Life Saved A Body Transformed
How You Too Can Lose and Rebuild
My middle is a mess. From the side, my body looks like a barrel.
Thats what my wife said to me one morning in the fall of 2013 as she saw her reflection in our full-length mirror. Please help me NOW, Jeanenne pleaded.
I had been trying to convince her to do my basic diet and exercise program, which she knew by heart, especially since shed started and stopped it three or four times in the last year. But on that day, I knew she was at the end of her rope, that she was absolutely serious.
Over the last two years, Jeanenne had gone through a series of life-threatening experiences. In March 2011, while vacationing in Aruba, she nearly drowned. She was swimming in the ocean with our 6-year-old daughter riding on her back. Jeanenne is a strong swimmer, but she suddenly started gasping for air and going under. Luckily, our friend Gregg Godlewski, a former lifeguard, spotted her struggling and was able to rescue her.
Something, however, wasnt right in her chest. She flew back home to Orlando the next morning, where doctors told her she was in congestive heart failure; blood was regurgitating back into her upper heart chamber. She needed to be operated on immediately.
Two days later, Jeanenne had open-heart surgery to repair a mitral valve that wouldnt close. For the second time in a week, her life had been saved.
Saved but Not Better
The recovery was slow and fraught with complications, like a grapefruitsize blood clot that required more surgery and caused extreme pain for 2 weeks. She stopped all exercise. She then started a medication that caused her to gain weight. Over the next 6 months, she put on 40 pounds, making her the heaviest shed ever been, at 184.5 pounds.
My wife has always been lean and athletic. She had natural childbirths at ages 42 and 45. Even during pregnancy, her friends would say, Gosh, Jeanenne, your arms and shoulders look amazing. Exercise and active living are an integral part of her life. We have a full gym in our home, but Jeanenne could no longer bring herself to use it. I was so depressed thinking Id never be the same, she remembered. I love clothes and dressing, but none of them fit anymore. I started to hate myself.
