Preface

After several years of concerted effort, we are pleased to present the second edition ofClinical Nuclear Medicine. In the years following the publication of the first edition, groundbreaking developments have taken place in the field of nuclear medicine. Among those developments are the increasing use of hybrid imaging as well as the revolutionary progress that has been made in radiochemistry and radiopharmacy. Imaging of prostate cancer using PSMA ligands was a game changer in terms of the available diagnostic approaches to prostate cancer. The treatment of neuroendocrine tumors using peptide receptor radionuclide therapy with [177Lu]Lu-DOTA-TATE is now an approved therapy under marketing authorization. The treatment of prostate cancer using PSMA ligands will become an approved therapy in the near future as well, joining223Ra-dichloride, used to treat bony prostate metastases.

Compared to the first edition ofClinical Nuclear Medicine, we have added several new chapters to this edition, while some of the original chapters have been completely rewritten. Chapter Two, Radiopharmaceutical Sciences, could be described as a textbook within a textbook. Radiochemistry/Radiopharmacy is one of the most important fields of our specialty, and therefore, we invited a group of experienced experts to help update this chapter. We would like to express our thanks and respect to all the authors and contributing colleagues of this chapter, and especially to Prof. Dr. Klaus Kopka for his fantastic work in harmonizing this topic for the currentClinical Nuclear Medicine. He assembled this group of expert scientists who contributed to their distinct subtopics for this chapter. Radionuclide therapy in general, and theranostics in particular, will become an increasingly important field of our specialty over the next 20 years. Hence, the therapy section has been completely updated in this edition. With respect to the topics of nuclear hematology, and the application of nuclear medicine diagnostic techniques to various miscellaneous applications, readers are referred to the excellent and comprehensive chapters which appeared in the first edition of the textbook.

We wish to thank all the contributors to this book for their efforts. It has been a privilege to work with them. We are aware that this book, similar to other textbooks, will require continuous updating. Therefore, we invite all readers to email their comments and suggestions to the authors at uclearmedicine@gmail.com, under subject CNM. We will use your comments and suggestions when preparing the third edition ofClinical Nuclear Medicine.
