Introduction
Everyone knows that exercise is good for the body. Combined with a well-balanced diet, it is key to maintaining physical as well as mental health. Every day Americans are bombarded with the message that if they don't exercise, they will face serious consequencesfrom poor health to rejection by friends and family.
It is true that exercise is important to physical health. However, failing to exercise or not being very good at a particular sport are not character flaws. It is unfortunate that the original messagethat exercise is valuable to one's healthhas been twisted into a scare tactic that helps sell diet supplements, workout gadgets, and gym memberships. That message leaves many people feeling inadequate no matter how fit they are.
Organized sports hold an important place within America's fitness obsession. Our professional athletes are paid millions of dollars for their physical abilities; our champion amateur athletes are hailed

as heroes for winning events such as the Rose Bowl and the Olympic Games. Even people who excel at sports on a local level are treated like stars in their schools, communities, and places of employment. Children learn early on that being a member of an athletic team is a good way to earn popularity. Adults see, through events such as company softball games and client golf outings, that athletic prowess is sometimes even rewarded with career advancement.
With so much to gain from fitness and so much to lose without it, it's no wonder that many athletes overexercise or develop eating disorders in an effort to be "the best." But is every person who plays on a team or works out alone at risk? Are some sports more likely to trigger these conditions? Are girls at greater risk than boys? These questions and many others are addressed in this bookand the answers may surprise you.

When the process is working properly, an organism takes in as much nutrition as it needs and converts it to an adequate amount of energy. In human terms, this means that a person eats as many calories as he or she needs and no more, maintaining an ideal body weight and energy level. Unfortunately, this ideal is rarely achieved. Most people struggle to find the right balance, consuming either too many or too few calories, taking in too much fat and sugar and too few vitamins, and exercising either too much or too little. When the nutritional process is out of balance, the result is called disordered eating, and an estimated four out of five people are afflicted by it. Even animals can suffer from disordered eating. When an animal consistently gorges itself and
