Series Introduction
Marcel Dekker, Inc., has focused on the development of various series of beautifully produced books in different branches of medicine. These series have facilitated the integration of rapidly advancing information for both the clinical specialist and the researcher.
My goal as editor-in-chief of the Fundamental and Clinical Cardiology series is to assemble the talents of world-renowned authorities to discuss virtually every area of cardiovascular medicine. In the current monograph, Practical Critical Care in Cardiology , Zab Mohsenifar and P. K. Shah have edited a much-needed and timely book. Other contributions to this series include books on molecular biology, interventional cardiology, and clinical management of such problems as coronary artery disease and ventricular arrhythmias.

Preface
Approximately two years ago, we were invited to chair a symposium on critical care issues of importance to cardiologists and related specialists at the American Heart Association meeting in Anaheim, California. The symposium focused on topics pertinent to intensive care management that are not usually emphasized in general cardiology training. Following this successful symposium, a number of the attendees approached us about writing a textbook that would focus on noncardiology critical care issues likely to be encountered in cardiac intensive care units. Thus, the seeds of this textbook were planted that afternoon in Anaheim.
