ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
The essays in this collection are meant to be representative both of the best current work on the nature of interpretation and of the necessity for such work to go beyond narrow disciplinary interests. We were aided in bringing the essays together by several institutions and individuals. The Rockefeller Foundation and the Center for Humanistic Studies at the University of Kansas enabled a number of the contributors to present initial versions of their papers to one another at a conference in April 1981 which had the same title as this book. Since then, many of these papers have been revised to take into account the exchange of views that took place. The other essays in the book are intended to reflect the broad range of hermeneutical alternatives that are now being actively explored.
For their assistance with various stages of this project we are grateful to the Rockefeller Foundation for its support; to Richard De George, Director of the Center for Humanistic Studies, and Gretchen Nolle of its staff for their enthusiasm and practical help; to the Matchette Foundation for making possible the forum at which Hans-Georg Gadamer and J. N. Mohanty presented earlier versions of their papers; and to Anthony C. Genova and Scott McNall, Chairs of the Philosophy and Sociology Departments at Kansas, for their aid in marshaling resources. The typing and preparation of the manuscript would have been impossible without the support of the Office of Research, Graduate Studies and Public Service, at the University of Kansas and the fine and patient work of Sharon Cox, Janice Criss, and Aurora Ripley. Finally, Dick Martin and Pam Campbell of the University of Massachusetts Press gave invaluable advice in the preparation of the collection for publication.
