Acknowledgments
Decadence and degeneration have little in common: one refines corruption and the other corrupts refinement The decadent, at least, maintains a standard of decline, while the degenerate lets those standards slip. In this book, I have tried to measure up to the level of decadence achieved by my models and mentors, friends and colleagues. But in decadence as in other matters, nothing fails like success: those who are truly decadent do not do. Simply by writing the book I have participated in a process of degeneration and failed to maintain the dark ideal of decadence. But the fault is mine alone (call it negative culpability), and those who should be exonerated of responsibility for the final, flawed form this book assumed include Brian Swarm, Karen Duys, Alessandra Maffei, and other colleagues at The Cooper Union; Karin Drew and the apprentice decadents at The New School for Social Research; Professors Anna Balakian and Daniel Javitch of New York University; Professor Theoharis C. Theoharis of Harvard University; Professor Michael Seidel of Columbia University; and Clark Dougan and the staff of the University of Massachusetts Press. I thank them all for enlightenment and encouragement, but most of all I thank my wife, Camillefor living up to her nineteenth-century name.
A small portion of this book appeared in earlier form in the James Joyce Quarterly:
