We dedicate this book to Gordon W. Hewes, whose contributions to comparative studies in primate and human behavior, and strong advocacy of such studies as aids to understanding hominid evolution, helped reform anthropological understanding of the nature of culture.
Hewes's theory of the gestural origins of language, remarkable both for intellectual plenitude and philosophic rigor, revived the study of language origins as a respectable pursuit. A masterful synthesis of information gleaned from a wide range of scientific disciplines, it retains its influence and its power to generate fresh insights into the evolution of language and cognition.
