Badass Civil War Beards: summary, description and annotation

From the cavemen to the hipsters of today, beards have been the hallmark of brave and manly men. For some reason, the popularity of beards skyrocketed during the late 19th century, when men became more willing to experiment with never-before-seen facial hair styles. Abraham Lincoln even grew his beard because a little girl wrote him and said hed look more presidential with one. A little over two years ago, sisters Anna and Julia Hider were discussing why all Civil War soldiers seemed to sport crazy beards. Their conversation quickly became the blog Badass Civil War Beards (http://badasscivilwarbeards.tumblr.com), which they cowrote between classes at two separate universities. The concept touched a funny bone, andBadass Civil War Beards, the book, was born. It features over 100 of the Civil Wars most stupidly awesome (and awesomely stupid) examples of facial hair, accompanied by short analyses, historical tidbits, poems, and puns about each person and...

INTRODUCTION
Four score and seven beards ago Okay, maybe more like 150 years ago, the Civil War tore America apart. Metaphorically (and sometimes literally), it was brother against brother. It was kind of a big deal at the time and it still is today.

America wasnt quite the same afterwardsbut everyone knows all about that already. What most history books fail to mention is the peculiar rise in popularity of ridiculously absurd facial hair. Were talking about completely preposterous, totally out-there stuff. The cause of this phenomenon is still a mystery. Maybe it made the soldiers feel more badass. Perhaps they felt freer to take facial hair risks when they werent around women.

Or did they grow manly beards to strike fear into the hearts of the enemies? Whatever the reason, the trend reached just about everyoneNortherners and Southerners alike sprouted beard, mustache and sideburn styles unlike anything history had ever seen. It was totally awesome. Its unfortunate that the two sides of this conflict could only see what divided them instead of the facial hair that unified them. But now, weve had a century and a half to reflect on the war, learn from the past, and rediscover this magical Golden Age of Facial Hair.
