Preface
This book was begun in September of 1981 when I found myself trapped in a small town on the south coast of England with nothing to read. My mother had suddenly become seriously ill and I had flown home without considering what I might do during the weeks I spent there. Expecting little of the small local bookstore, I explored my mother's bookshelves and rediscovered Brittain's Testament of Youth and Holtby's South Riding sitting alongside novels by Rebecca West, Mary Webb, Storm Jameson, Margaret Kennedy, and Phyllis Bentley. I had vague memories of reading both books as an adolescent in the fifties, though by that time they had already been on the shelves in our house for twenty years, long enough to become forgotten. My mother had obviously bought them when they were best sellers in the thirties, but somehow in the intervening years they had failed to establish places for themselves in the canon of twentieth-century fiction, a failure they shared with most of their companions on my mother's shelves.
