Preface
Willa Cather once called The Country of the Pointed Firs (1896) an American classic able to stand alongside Huckleberry Finn and The Scarlet Letter.1 Cather notwithstanding, Sarah Orne Jewett's Pointed Firs hasn't gotten that kind of recognition. It may be partly because it doesn't fit the pattern of most American classics, those novels that Nina Baym labeled "melodramas of beset manhood."2 There's no search for the father, no exploration of untracked wilderness, no hunt to kill the magical beast, let alone an easily discernible plot. Instead, an unmarried writer visits a tiny Maine fishing village, where she hopes to write a book in peace and quiet. Over the course of the summer she becomes intimately acquainted with her landlady, Mrs. Todd, a motherly widow who raises herbs and nurses her neighbors according to ancient remedies. This pastoral interlude closes with the summer itself. As the narrator leaves on her steamer for the city, she looks back over the water for a last glimpse of her friend.
The world described here is a simple one, virtually without conflict. The writer's solitary routine is punctuated by feminine rituals: tea parties, neighborly visits, confidential talks, and reminiscing. The grand event is a family reunion in which the anonymous narrator's adoption by Mrs. Todd is signified by their sharing of a sacramental gingerbread house. The narrator does not fall in love with the local doctoras the cover of one paperback edition seemed to suggest. In fact, there are no young men around at all, and the only romance is the gently sketched courtship of two people over sixty. Indeed, the primary bonds here are between womenmothers, daughters, cousins, and friends. The chapter describing William Blackett's wedding actually closes not with the married couple but with Mrs. Todd and the narrator watching them sail away, then walking home themselves, holding hands.
