Acknowledgments
There aren't many, but the few people who have made their presence felt in this book deserve mention here.
Mary Elizabeth King, Keeper of Collections, the University Museum, Philadelphia, acted as formal consultant. She read and annotated every chapter, and her suggestions and corrections saved me much time and countless errors.
Katherine R. Koob, Assistant Curator of Textiles, Merrimack Valley Textile Museum, Andover, Mass., read and criticized Chapter 7, "The Drawloom," and gave freely of her knowledge and understanding of how the looms discussed in that chapter work.
Jerome Jacobson, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, The City College, City University of New York, read and criticized Chapter 1, "Origins," and among other things alerted me to the Seuss calibration chart, which compensates for the inaccuracies of carbon-14 dating beyond 1000 B.C. He tried valiantly to check the many dates to assure consistency in dating, but I take full responsibility for any errors.
Howard K. Battles, a close friend and superb editor, read and criticized the entire manuscript for clarity and style. His thirty-five pages of notes would have devastated me had I not received them a chapter at a time. His comments were invariably on the mark, forcing me to attend to loose writing, vagueness, and inadequate explanations of technical detail.
At various times the following people provided direction, advice, criticism, and support far in excess of what they probably thought, and for their help I am equally grateful: Milton Sonday, Curator, Cooper-Hewitt Museum, New York; Dr. Junius B. Bird, Curator Emeritus, American Museum of Natural History, New York; Rita Adrosko, Curator, Division of Textiles, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; Ruth Katz, author of Card Weaving.
Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to the New York Public Library for making the resources of the Frederick Lewis Allen Room available to me during my many long months of research.break
