Acknowledgments
Like the poems it studies, this book has had its own narrative of composition that has, among other things, generated debts and gratitudes. I started it during a semester's appointment to the Center for Advanced Studies at the University of Illinois, and later it was supported by funds from the University's Research Board. I am grateful for this aid. My colleagues Nina Baym and James Hurt both read and commented fully on an early version of this manuscript, and Laurence Lieberman, a writer of long poems himself, always provided cheerful encouragement. I was assisted by two extremely able graduate students, Nancy Barry at the beginning of the project, and Karen Ford at the end. And finally, much too late, I acknowledge the example of Hyatt Waggoner, who early taught me what I could then learn.
Versions of Chapter 2, "The Bridge," and Chapter 5, "The Cantos," appeared in American Literature (March 1985) and ELH (Winter 1984).
