We become aware of the void as we fill it.
Antonio Porchia, Voices.
"Here we are again," said Rachel.
She was lying on the sofa in a provocative pose. Rainbows lit her hair, bounced off the walls. Rachel is to me what Beatrice was to Dante. She shows me the way. Well, more or less. Sometimes she just goes her own way and I go astray.
"Yeah," I grumped.
I was feeling at loose ends. The business was humming along, it didn't need me. All the records were up to date, all the letters answered. My desk was clean as a whistle. I had nothing to do. I felt the Void closing in.
Where does my energy want to go? I wondered.
"It's a good time for a holiday," said Rachel. She flashed me a bright smile. She loves to travel.
I grimaced.
"You have to learn to just be." said Rachel.
"I will, I will. Next year. Maybe."
I wandered into the back yard. Arnold was there. He was scratching in the earth and humming to himself. We'd lived together in Zrich while we were training to be analysts. Now he was a neighbor. Arnold had a garden of his own, but sometimes he worked in mine too. He looked up and saw my mood.
"Doesn't your heart sing to see growing things?" he said. I shrugged.
"Don't you thrill to the change of seasonsspring water rushing through the woods, the heavy heat of summer, multicolored leaves in the fall, the pristine brightness of snow?"
I yawned.
"Come," said Arnold, "smell the flowers."

He led me around like a blind man. He stuck my face in the hybrid roses. He pressed my nose against the lilacs and marched me past the cedars. He pointed out the impatiens, the lilies and petunias, the giant bulb begonias that took two days to plant.
"A garden is a very special place," said Arnold. He snapped his purple suspenders.
"Yes," I agreed. But it made no difference.
