Many people have contributed to the writing and production of this study of the pioneer railroad in the Piney Woods. The administration at Stephen F. Austin State College has shown both interest and encouragement in the project and through the Bureau of East Texas Research has provided me with time and travel funds to pursue the story. The officials of the Southern Pacific Lines have extended every courtesy and have opened their files and private records without restriction for my perusal. Mr. F. I. Tucker, of Nacogdoches, has kindly read the manuscript and made a number of helpful suggestions. Several persons, including my wife, Margaret Dunning Maxwell, have assisted in typing and editing the copy. The Texas Gulf Coast Historical Association is to be thanked for providing for the publication of the work, as is editor James A. Tinsley for his patience and care in preparing the manuscript for the printer. The errors, of course, are all my own.

Maxwell served in the army during WMII as a company commander. He received academic degrees from Kentucky Wesleyan, the University of Cincinnati, and the University of Wisconsin, and taught at the universities of Wisconsin and Kentucky before moving to Stephen F. Austin State University. Up there, he had earned a national reputation in the history of the Progressive Era; in East Texas, he became
