There are at least three points where chaosa tumult of events which lack not interpretation but interpretabilitythreatens to break in upon man: at the limits of his analytic capacities, at the limits of his powers of endurance, and at the limits of his moral insight. Bafflement, suffering, and a sense of intractable ethical paradox are all, if they become intense enough or are sustained long enough, radical challenges to the proposition that life is comprehensible and that we can, by taking thought, orient ourselves effectively within it.

Acknowledgments
The origins of this book can be traced to a wonderfully stimulating course in popular formula fiction taught by John Cawelti one summer when I was a graduate student at the University of Iowa. It is a pleasure to acknowledge his influence as well as that of Stow Persons and Alexander Kern, with whom I also studied at Iowa. At the University of Pennsylvania, Murray G. Murphey supported my interests in popular fiction in the best possible wayby allowing me to create and teach courses on detective fiction and society.
Without institutional support from the University of Maryland, College Park, this work could not have been completed. A grant from the Research Center for the Arts and Humanities provided a semester's leave from administrative responsibilities to work on a draft. Sadly, the Research Center was one of the first casualties of budget cuts in 1990, thus depriving others of the opportunity to devote their full time to research and writing while still drawing their salary. Sabbatical leave in the spring of 1995 enabled me to complete the manuscript; I am grateful to Robert Griffith, the former dean of the College of Arts and Humanities, for approving that leave. For her support and encouragement, I am also indebted to my former colleague, Hasia Diner. My students over the years have usefully questioned and challenged my ideas. I am especially appreciative of those who read and commented on all or part of the manuscript: David Weinstein, Jenny Thompson, Jan Blodgett, Shelby Shapiro, Greg Wahl, and Tom Frank. Valerle Brown and Kathleen Waters provided invaluable secretarial assistance.
