The ideal medical student at the end of the clinical course will have written his or her own textbook a digest of the lectures and tutorials assiduously attended and of the textbooks meticulously read. Unfortunately, few students are perfect, and most approach the qualifying examinations depressed by the thought of the thousands of pages of excellent and exhaustive textbooks wherein lies the wisdom required of them by the examiners.
We believe that there is a serious need in these days of widening knowledge and expanding syllabus for a book that will set out briefly the important facts in general surgery that are classified, analysed and as far as possible rationalized for the revision student. These lecture notes represent our own final-year teaching; they are in no way a substitute for the standard textbooks but are our attempts to draw together in some sort of logical way the fundamentals of general surgery.
Because this book is written at student level, principles of treatment only are presented, not details of surgical technique.
The need after only 5 years for a new, 13th edition reflects the rapid changes which are taking place in surgical practice. We are confident that our constant updating will ensure that this volume will continue to serve the requirements of our medical students.
It is 50 years since the first edition of Lecture Notes in General Surgery, and much has changed in that time. The biggest change for the reader is the introduction with this edition of an electronic version that has hyperlinks to images and photographs to support the text, as well as to case studies and biographies. We hope the reader will find this innovation particularly welcome.

We are grateful to our colleagues consultants, registrars, housemen and students who have read and criticized this text during its production, and to many readers and reviewers for their constructive criticisms. In particular, we are indebted to John Dark (Chapters 10 and 11), Stephen Price (Chapters 14 and 15) and William Turner (Chapters 4146) for transforming the cardiothoracic, neurosurgery and urology sections; in addition, Justin Davies (Chapters 26 and 27), Neville Jamieson (Chapter 40), Michael Allison (Chapter 30) and Raaj Praseedom (Chapters 30, 31 and 32) updated their respective chapters.
This golden jubilee edition has an extensive electronic resource including clinical cases and many radiographs and histology slides illustrating conditions mentioned in the text. We are particularly grateful to Sara Upponi and Siobhan Whitley for providing the radiographs, helped by Dan Scoffings, and also to Aileen Patterson, Meryl Griffiths and Elena Provenzano for the histology slides.
Finally, we would like to acknowledge the continued help given by the staff at Wiley-Blackwell, in particular to Martin Davies and Elizabeth Johnston for commissioning this edition and facilitating the development of the electronic content, James Schultz and Fiona Goodgame for guidance through the early production stages, Jane Andrew for overseeing the production, and Holly Regan-Jones who has meticulously steered this edition from text to finished product.
