Preface
I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I I took the one less travelled by, And that has made all the difference. Robert Frost
From the start, whether that start is dated from the stories he wrote in high school and sent out to magazines under a false name and without a return address, or from pieces scratched out in his room at Stanford in lieu of attending classes, John Steinbeck had a clear vision of the literary road he wanted to take. Although it had curious doglegs, detours, and potholes over the course of his career, he followed it with singular determination. He experienced many distractions, as if lured here and there by artistic experiments and innovations. Yet there remains a hard core of purpose and direction in his writing; certain fundamental artistic beliefs and techniques undergird everything he wrote.
The aim of this book is twofold: first, to consider Steinbeck's artistic premises and guiding beliefs, and, second, to appraise the artistic product in the light of those beliefs and according to aesthetic standards for excellence.
Along his own personal road Steinbeck had close friends who affected him profoundly, and whose friendship he acknowledged with gratitude. It would be remiss for me to do less in this work. To Cheryl Heideman, Alma Walhout, and Barb De Vos, whose skills with typewriters, word proces-

sors, and other electronic mysteries are beyond me, go my thanks. To James Vanden Bosch and Gorden Bordewyk for reading portions of this manuscript, I give much deserved credit. To Edward E. Ericson, whose scholarship I prize as much as his friendship, I give thanks for his unfailing support. To Calvin College for a generous sabbatical, to the Calvin Alumni Association for a research grant, and to Stanford University Libraries for their expert assistance and priceless resources, all things without which scholarship would not exist, go my thanks. And finally, to John J. and Carolyn Jane Timmerman, to whom this book is dedicated, thanks again.
