ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
We should like to thank Alison Cooper for all her advice and assistance through all the drafts of this book; the staff of Arragon Road Day Centre, Harcourt House and William Kuhn Lodge, London Borough of Newham for their comments; and Carol Duffy for the many hours spent typing and retyping the manuscript.
The authors
Mike Bender received his Masters Degree in Psychology from Edinburgh and graduated as a clinical psychologist in 1971. He obtained his PhD in 1981, the same year as he received his Fellowship of the British Psychological Society. He headed the first team of community psychologists in a Social Services Department.
He has worked with all the major client groups and, on the basis of this experience, has written a large number of research and practical papers. He wrote Community Psychology (Methuen, 1976) and co-authored The Quality of Dying (Winslow, 1990) with Christa Lloyd and Alison Cooper. In 1988 he became Principal Psychologist, Services to the Elderly, for Plymouth Health Authority.
Andrew Norris is a Senior Clinical Psychologist working with the elderly for both Health and Social Services in Cambridge. He qualified at the Maudsley Hospital, London and then took up a post developing psychological services to the elderly and multi-disciplinary team work in Kent.
He has been particularly interested in exploring reminiscence-based work with elderly people and has run a number of workshops; he has also helped produce a training film for Help the Aged on this subject.
