Preface
The first edition of this book was designed exclusively for those who wanted to "lose weight." Through the years of using the book in university programs and in my private counseling practice, it has become apparent that when students or clients enroll in a weight management practicum or enter a health counseling program with an obvious or spoken goal to get rid of unwanted pounds, behind that presenting problem there are other target goals that are unspoken, perhaps not even realized on a conscious level. Among these less obvious targets are wanting to be strong, agile, attractive, popular, happy, and healthy in all aspects of their lives. The areas of personal strengths, confidence, and self-esteem are rarely addressed immediately by clients, but emerge as vital areas of change during the program. Because all health behavior change is most effective when approached in a holistic manner, I have changed the focus of the book slightly to give greater emphasis to the importance of physical fitness, coping ability, eating behavior, and interpersonal relationships. The target behaviors for health behavior change expand from that of weight management to a total increase in fitness: physical, mental, emotional, social, and what we might even call spiritual. Those who are used to the first edition will note the subtle shift in emphasis, while new users can immediately begin to use the expanded focus.
Most of the clients who come to me suspect that I have a magic program to give them that will cause them to shed pounds, become more fit, be less stressed, and thereby be healthier and happier.
Instead, clients are introduced to a plan for changing their life-stylesa plan that includes the successful parts of many different weight management, fitness, and general health counseling programs.
