AN IMPORTANT NOTE

The world is a dynamic place. Hotels change ownership, restaurants hike their prices, museums alter their opening hours, and busses and trains change their routings. And all of this can occur in the several months after our authors have visited, inspected, and written about, these hotels, restaurants, museums and transportation services. Though we have made valiant efforts to keep all our information fresh and up-to-date, some few changes can inevitably occur in the periods before a revised edition of this guidebook is published. So please bear with us if a tiny number of the details in this book have changed. Please also note that we have no responsibility or liability for any inaccuracy or errors or omissions, or for inconvenience, loss, damage, or expenses suffered by anyone as a result of assertions in this guide.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Stephen Brewer has been writing travel guides for three decades. As an editor and writer, he has focused on European coverage for such magazines as Esquire, Connoisseur, and Geo, and he was a producer of a popular radio travel show for many years. He has written several previous guides for Frommers, Insight, and other companies, and he authored Beautiful Small Coastal Towns for Rizzoli. Stephen divides his time between Manhattan and Italy and travels frequently to Germany, where he is currently tracing his parents role in postwar rebuilding and refugee resettlement efforts.

Rachel Glassberg moved from Los Angeles to Berlin in 2011 to rediscover her German roots, escape the tyranny of car ownership, and spend less money on rent and pilsner. Within the next year, she found herself deputy editor of the English-language print and online magazine Exberliner. In addition to correcting misplaced apostrophes and regulating the use of Berlin clichs like the phrase poor but sexy, shes reported on Wild West amusement parks, anti-Semitism, German music rights, and food, food, food. In her spare time, she writes songs about the Ampelmann and Sven the Berghain doorman.

Born and raised in Berlin, Germany, Kat Morgenstern discovered her passion for travel early on. At the tender age of 18, she left Germany to begin a journey that has taken her halfway around the world and is still in progress today. Professionally, Kat is a grassroots herbalist, ethnobotanist, nature mentor, writer and eco-travel professional. She is the founder and director of Sacred Earth, a network and educational resource for plant people of all species, and of Sacred Earth Travel , a dedicated online eco-travel consultancy and the author of several walking guides. Having spent most of her adult life in the UK, the US and France, she currently makes her home between the southwest of England and Germanys southern Black Forest, where she has explored the mountains and vales, mostly on foot.

A native German, Andrea Schulte-Peevers has been a professional travel journalist for over 20 years. After spending most of her adulthood in the UK and the USA, she now makes her home back in her beloved Berlin. A Germany content expert, her extensive work portfolio includes guidebooks, articles, online content, photography and consulting about all regions and facets of the country. Her work has been published by Lonely Planet, National Geographic, Michelin, Dorling-Kindersley, USA Today , Conde Nast Traveler and many more.

Donald Strachan is a writer and journalist who has written about Europe for publications worldwide, including National Geographic Traveler , the Guardian , Sunday Telegraph, Independent and others. He resides in London.

Courtney Tenz came to Germany in 2005 as a Fulbright recipient and has lived in Cologne ever since. She is a culture editor at Deutsche Welle and writes frequently about German culture and the arts. For this edition, she toured the Mosel Valley and Trier, indulging her love for castles and wine along the way.

A former travel editor at Frommers, Caroline Sieg is a half-Swiss, half-American writer and editor focusing on travel, food, arts, design, and the outdoors. She grew up bilingual (English and German) and has spent most of her life moving back and forth across the Atlantic Ocean, with significant stops in Berlin and Munich. Her favorite things about Germany include the endless cycling paths, convivial outdoor beer gardens, and traditional German breakfasts with heaps of cheese, meat, and homemade jam and freshly baked dark bread.

Narrow lanes lace Bremens Schnoor district.

T he word is out and maybe youve heard it: Germany is one of Europes great travel destinations. Every year, ever more visitors from around the globe are discovering the pleasures of Germanys cities, towns, and countryside. Tourist numbers have risen steadily in the last quarter-century, and show no sign of slowing down.

Germanys appeal is no great mystery. Moody forests, jagged Alpine peaks, and miles of neatly tended vineyards are not just scenic, but also the stuff of legend, places that have inspired fairy tales and where much of Western history has been played out. The Germans more than anyone appreciate the soothing tonic of a hike in the Black Forest or a stroll on North Sea dunes; even seeing these storied lands from a train window can be good for the soul. As for foodwell, dont write off the cuisine as just heaping plates of wurst and sauerkraut and schnitzel with noodles. One of the pleasures of traveling in Germany is discovering the subtle differences in regional cuisines, and beyond that, there are the culinary envelope-pushers of Germanys raft of award-winning restaurants, plus a delicious patchwork of ethnic flavors imported through Germanys tolerant immigration policies. You can dine out on the traditions of a vast WHAT.
