Acknowledgments
I hope John Murphy doesnt read this. Hes the director of publicity at my publisher, St. Martins Press. I know he knows I think hes fabulous, but if he really knew how grateful I am for his tireless efforts, his encouragement, and his friendship, it would just go to his head. John has been my #1 fan since I met him in an elevator in 2005. Hes pushed and fought (and probably annoyed many a producer) to get me in the door. Hes the best friend and supporter a guy could ask for. Thank you for everything, John! You are the BEST.
Heres how lucky I amI was able to work with two amazing editors at St. Martins Press. Thank you first to David Moldawer. He immediately got The Other 8 hours and helped me refine and define what makes a Cre8tor different from a creator. David, it was an honor to work with you for those first few weeks, and I wish you continued success at your new firm.
I was then fortunate to work closely with Kathy Huck. She is a fantastic editor. She was the yin to my yang. She kept me in check and helped set the tone for the book. She was patient and thoughtful. She understands that writers pour their heart into their work and was always considerate enough to say, What if you tried this? instead of saying, This is crapneed to rework. Kathy, thank you for telling me what I needed to hear in the way I needed to hear it. Thats a gift. I look forward to working with you again!
Thanks to the following experts who answered the question, What one thing should readers do with their other 8 hours that will have the greatest positive impact on their lives? Leo Babauta, Kim Barnouin, Seth Godin, Sonja Lyumbirsky, Merlin Mann, Michael Michalowicz, Gretchen Rubin, Tim Sanders, and Twyla Tharp.
Thank you to all those who shared their AnOther 8 Success story: Dr. Susan Biali, Michael Brooke, Todd Defren, Mindee Doney, Allison Hagendorf, Cheryl Haggard, Samantha Hahn, Miriam Hughes, Ryan Kappel, Michael Khalili, Nick Loper, Charla Muller, Drew Oliver, Darren Rowse, John Schulte, and Eric Stephens.
Thank you to everyone at 20/20, Dr. Phil , and Good Morning America (and to Chris Cuomo, the only guy in the country who can say my last name better than I can!). Youve all been so supportive and gracious. Ive loved being part of the team.
There are few things more satisfying to me than sitting down at my computer, feeling a warm summer breeze, cranking up some loud music, and writing. Thanks to the following bands for providing me energy and inspiration: Guns N Roses ( Chinese Democracy rocks!), Coldplay, Incubus, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Sugarland (Something More is the theme song for this book).
As always, thank you to my team at Dupree Miller & Associates. My superagent, Miller, Jan Miller, and Nena Madonia are full of energy and passion. Thank you for pushing me to write the best book I can and for your years of support and encouragement.
A special thank you to my sister, Cathy Pagliarini. Those long phone calls on the road from LA provided some important clarification and inspiration for the book. Thanks to Mike Millar for his friendship and seemingly never-ending help with the subtitle. Thanks to Simon Anthony for his review and tips for writing a screenplay. And thanks to Barrett Yeretsian for his insight into the Music Cre8tor Channel.
Words cannot express the gratitude I have for having two amazing women in my lifemy wife, Elizabeth Pagliarini, and my daughter, Alexandra Bean Pagliarini. A lot of wives are supportive, but my wife has gone one step further. Many years ago she saw something in me that I didnt see in myself. She believed in me and has inspired me to not settle and to keep reaching. Confidence is like a little seed. With a little caring and support it can turn into a massive and strong tree. Elizabeth helped plant that first seed. Thank you. Ill love you forever.
I was born on October 5, 2005at least thats what it feels like. The minute my daughter was born I was a new man. She has brought joy that is indescribable. She is the prettiest girl in the world, and I am so proud to be her daddy. Bean, a few years from now youll be able to read about how much I love you, but I hope there isnt a day that goes by that you dont know this already.
Lastly, thank you to God and his son, Jesus. Encourage all of us to spend some of the other 8 hours growing closer to you.
Introduction
Do you have a gap between where you are and where youd like to be? Maybe you have a mortgage you cant afford, credit card debt you cant get rid of, twenty pounds you cant seem to lose, kids who are asleep before you get home every night, or a gnawing feeling that life is passing you by. If so, whats the solution? Is it to sleep more? To work longer hours?
This book is about the 8 hours in the day when you are not working or sleeping. This free time is the most valuable resource you have to achieve your ideal life. Think about it. You lose 8 hours to sleep and you sell (at least) 8 hours to your job. That leaves just 8 more. What are you doing during the other 8 hours, and, more importantly, what are the other 8 hours doing for you?
Look around. Anyone who is successful and lives a rich and meaningful life has used the other 8 hours. Theyve probably never even heard of this concept, but dont kid yourself. They instinctively know this is the real secret to success and fulfillment. Day in and day out, while others squander this time, they have invested it.
How you spend the other 8 hours determines where you are in life, your happiness, your weight, your level of debt, the satisfaction you have with your relationships, the car you drive, the languages you speak, your love life, your education, the places you travel, your bank account balance, and just about everything else that is important to you.
It doesnt really matter where your gaps are because the solution is the same. The only way to radically improve your life and your financial situation is to do something with the other 8 hours. This book will show you how to close the gaps in your life by investing the other 8 hours in yourself. Its about resurrecting the goals and dreams you once had, creating new opportunities, and reclaiming your life.
Are you nervous? A little worried? Dont let the title scare you. The Other 8 Hours is not about cramming more into an already overscheduled daya full calendar doesnt equal a full life. The Other 8 Hours is about focusing on those activities that are most important and getting you closer to living your ideal life. And, look at it this way, youre a natural. Unless youre reading this while sleeping or working (tsk, tsk), youre already using your free time to improve yourself and your life.
