Medicare and its various supplemental plans offers comprehansive health coverage for aging and retired Americans. While this is a right of passage for those in their 60s, this program can be complicated and confusing. Idiots Guides: Medicare is an easy-to-understand guide that explains all of the rules, processes, and benefits, and how to maximize those benefits. Beginning with a brief background on what Medicare is and why it was established, the book explores all parts of the program, including the prescription drug program, Part D. It also offers tips on closing Medicare coverage gaps and what the future of Medicare may entail.

To patients everywhere.
Because we all need an advocate.

Introduction

If you are ready to retire and know exactly how Medicare will take care of your health-care needs, good for you! You are in the minority. Odds are you need a little help understanding how Medicare works, and I am here to lend a hand.

I am a family physician by trade and have years of first-hand experience to guide the way. As a practicing doctor, early on I became frustrated by Medicares complicated web of rules and regulations. Why were some tests I ordered being denied coverage by Medicare? Why were some of my patients paying more for the same services compared to other patients? How could I get my patients the medications they needed during gaps in Medicare coverage? If I was confused, I knew my patients were more so.

Talking with patients about their Medicare concerns only raised more issues. Some were angry that I, as their doctor, could not answer their specific questions about the program, when in truth health-care providers are given minimal training about Medicare. Sure, we may be trained on how to bill for our services, but beyond that, do we really learn how to maximize our patients care and save them money under the program? All too often the sad truth is no. I wanted to fill that gap. I wanted to be more than a doctor to my patients; I wanted to be their advocate.
