Praise for Blockchain Success Stories

I dont think Ive ever had as much fun learning about a technology protocol as I had while reading Blockchain Success Stories. The authors use characters and stories masterfully to entertain while delivering a huge payload of knowledge. As I read the book, I couldnt help but get nostalgic about the early days of the web, when only the most technically savvy among us could figure out how to produce and consume content in a browser. The following 20 years brought us YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, TikTok, and countless other society-changing platforms. Its inspiring to think about the opportunities the blockchain may offer to create value and transform lives over the next 20 years!

Gregg Spiridellis,
Founder of JibJab, Storybots, and HiHo Video

I was most impressed with the case studies in which blockchain technology addresses real-world problems like voting, supply chain, and especially credentialing . In todays world, it is preposterous that we still email around PDFs with sensitive financial information or protect a file cabinet or hidden drawer with our sacred documents (birth certificate, marriage license, immunization records, etc.) like it was 1950. If Apple Pay can eliminate the need to carry around a wallet full of credit cards, then blockchain can create an accurate, validated, securely accepted version of those closely guarded sacred paper relics. After reading this book, I can think of 50 credentialing/validation applications for the securities and banking industry.

Stephen D. Sautel,
Former COO and cofounder of Guggenheim Investments Corporate Credit Group

Finally, a book that goes beyond the hype and explains how entrepreneurs are making blockchain technology work in the real world. Blockchain Success Stories provides an easy-to-understand, highly engaging, and eminently readable primer on how blockchain works and what you can do with it. The detailed case studies the authors develop and lessons they distill offer practical insights and actionable ideas for newcomers and experienced blockchain entrepreneurs alike .

Brian Ray,
Leon M. and Gloria Plevin Professor of Law,
Director, Center for Cybersecurity and Privacy Protection, Cleveland-Marshall College of Law

The most successful blockchain professors are also blockchain students. As a professor of management, I love this quote. Hargrave and Karnoupakis lay a solid foundation for blockchain fundamentals and share real-world cases to highlight the current state. They also create a space to imagine the future which is a wonderful gift for me as an educator. This is essential reading for educators and their students.

Scott J. Allen, Ph.D.,

Hargrave and Karnoupakis possess a unique ability to take complex subject matter and then use analogies and stories to explain both its intricacies and relevance to any audience. I now see the potential for blockchain technology and how it would impact my industry. This is the team that I would want to write my story!

Introduction: Start with a Story

The opportunity of a technology like blockchain isnt to free us from trust in our institutions; it should be described as an experiment in building new kinds of collective institutions that we can trust. Trust is the currency of civilization.

Tim OReilly, founder and CEO, OReilly Media

Stories matter.

The human brain is hardwired for stories. Our earliest lessons come from childrens storiesfairy tales and fablesalways with a great lesson, a moral to the story. From the story of Cinderella, we learn Beauty is skin deep. From the myth of Icarus, we learn Dont fly too close to the sun. From practically every movie ever made, we learn Good will triumph over evil.

Stories are how we make meaning out of this funhouse ride called life. Stories are how we package up great human truths, then share them with future generations. Stories are how we get important concepts to latch on to the brain. Stories are sticky.

When your two authors were in business school, one of the most helpful methods of learning was the case study, which is a type of business story. In a case study, youre dropped into a real-world scenariomaybe youre the New York Times trying to go digital, or the CEO of Disney deciding whether to acquire Pixar. The case study ends at a point in timelike the end of a chapterand you have to figure out what to do next. You have to continue the story.

Case studies are fun to read because theyre real-world stories. Theyre interesting to analyze because, like business itself, theres no right or wrong answer. Theyre easier to remember because, instead of memorizing facts, you have a real-world example that will stick on to your brain like Velcro.

This is a book of stories.

Theyre not just any stories; theyre stories of people who built successful blockchain projects. By reading these stories, youll learn how to build successful blockchain projects yourself. This is not a blockchain programming bookthere are plenty of thosebut a book on how to actually build billion-dollar blockchains.

If youre new to blockchain, dont worry. Well teach you the basics of this fascinating technology, using stories of the mysterious misfits who built the earliest blockchain projects. (Truth, you will see, is stranger than fiction.)

Youll also hear firsthand from the entrepreneurs and dreamers who successfully built billion-dollar blockchains, from their first shaky steps to their glorious victory laps. Well bring their stories to life, from the roller-coaster highs to the death-valley lows. Youll breathe the stories through their lungs: the opportunities and the mistakes, the heart-wrenching challenges and the adrenaline-fueled triumphs.
