To my nephews, nieces and the future generation of wellness warriors who will hopefully spread the message and advice in this book
A sthma is related to ones diet and environment. Most dietary issues revolve around the production of excess mucus and inflammation. The major contributing factors of asthma and other lung diseases are dairy products and sugar, including substitutes like high-fructose syrups. These foods tend to cause inflammation and swelling in the bronchial tubes, besides leading to the production and secretion of mucus. This makes normal breathing difficult and often leads to a chronic condition. With this condition as the platform, a reverse reactiona muscle spasmoccurs. That is an asthma attack.
Air pollutants only worsen this condition. When the bronchial tubes swell up and are coated with sticky mucus, the respiratory system cannot discharge particulates efficiently. They stick to the inner bronchial tubes and cause further inflammation. Many children in India and China, where air pollution is accelerating, are prone to this condition.
Modern medicine currently has no cure for asthma. Bronchial dilators are very strong muscle relaxing agents that offer only temporary relief. Even though medication and dilators help relax the strong contractions of the bronchial tubes during an attack, if used regularly they can weaken and inflame the lungs even more, thereby leaving an individual prone to even more attacks. Therefore, we can say that dilators are a temporary solution that is harmful in the long run.
What we need is a long-term solution with dietary change as the foundation. The change needs to involve a move away from animal fats and sugars and towards a plant-based diet. It also involves consuming foods that work towards dissolving excess mucus in the body and reversing the weakness and inflammation in the lungs.
Traditional energy medicinesuch as yoga, macrobiotics, Ayurveda, naturopathy, Unanihad a very clear understanding about specific mucus-dissolving vegetables, which have now been lost. Besides consuming a healthy diet, which may be plant-based or plant-exclusive depending on an individuals values and choices, there are certain roots, seeds, medicinal concoctions and condiments that help pull out the mucus from the lungs and reverse inflammation. Taking care of your diet and purifying your blood helps minimize the damage inflicted by air pollution and other common triggers.
If we apply the information in this book with diligent consistency, the results will be self-evident. I have known Tarika for over thirteen years now and she has always been a deep thinker. She has an exceptional sensitivity, intelligence and dedication towards holistic health. Her caring nature and genuine concern for individual and planetary health is creditable. Not everyone has the ability to see things the way she does. Her message through this book can help solve the growing problem of lung and respiratory diseases, and create a generation of strong and healthy individuals.

author, macrobiotic educator and founder of the International Macrobiotic Institute
F or all of you suffering from asthma or any other respiratory disease, I wish to share genuine and practical information that would help improve or heal your condition. Today, people have lost the ancient knowledge and deep intuitive sagacity about life, health and nature. I must add that neglecting this ancient wisdom and nature-based life principles has only caused us harm.
Nothing is static. We change constantly. Every action, thought and choice we make; every person, school, organization or philosophy we encounter, leaves an impression on us. It may be active influence or subtle, a positive impression or negative. Similarly, the things we eat also affect us on many levels: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. We may or may not be aware of all the consequences of our daily actions, which may not manifest instantaneously but will surely do so over a period of time. Whichever way, change is inevitable and constant and directly linked to our daily lives, environment and choices.
Over a period of time, our daily choices have a cumulative effect. We must make healthy choices. What we choose affects our body, mind, health, digestive sensitivity, blood quality, physical strength, immune function, work, relationships, mood and much more.
Usually people refer to health as the result mentioned in a medical report or pain (or its absence) in the body. Yes, these are obvious and active signs of health. But these are not the only indications. We are simply unaware of the other signs. Our facial features, skin texture, blemishes, marks, pimples, hair quality, eyes and lips all speak volumes about what is happening inside of us. All of these change on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis. You could say that our ability to heal and change our negative state depends on the choices we make. For example, a persons cheeks are indicative of the health of his or her lungs. If the lungs are weak, the cheeks may appear discoloured, suffer loss of elasticity, become enlarged, drooping, or become prone to pimples, blemishes or freckles. Similarly, the lips represent the digestive system. The upper lip corresponds to the stomach and the lower lip represents the lower digestive system, i.e., the intestines. Reddish or swollen lips may be a sign of inflammation while dark lips may represent blood stagnation.
Over months and years of a well-guided holistic wellness practice, this can change for the better.
Our choices should be informed and must come from a good understanding of our body type and energy balance instead of just nutritional information. An understanding of the relationship between the energy provided by the food we eat and our body type is a more holistic approach to making healthy choices. Sometimes we think that we are doing everything we should for our health, but often it isnt organized, methodical or consistent enough to have a lasting effect. It makes more sense to study food as energy medicine rather than as nutrition to see a visible and lasting impact. It also makes more sense to think of food as more than just nutrients or calories. Besides scientific nutrition, everything we eat has its own unique energy, certain inherent qualities, nature and behaviour. How it acts in nature is how it will act within us. For example, stalks of grain resemble the human spine. Hence eating wholegrains helps to heal and develop our brain and spinal functions. Besides wholegrains containing nutrients and fibre, they have other qualities that are passed on to us when we consume them. This is referred to as energy medicine which is a combination of nutrition and other factors.
