Acknowledgments

Publication of this book closes a chapter of a collaboration that has involved a marvelous journey across the Americas. The project brought together four different researchers from three different countries, each with distinct institutional affiliations, each at a different stage of his careers. We combined our different interests and areas of expertise to study plantation landscapes in the U.S. South, Cuba, and Brazil. We were interested in what visual sources could tell us about the spatial and material organization of the plantation and how the landscape could help us to better understand the economic and social history of the three most dynamic zones of nineteenth-century slave production.
