This is especially important in the case of drugs that are new or seldom used.

I dedicate this book to my mother, Joyce Wanta, RN, RRT, who was one of the first respiratory therapists in Utah and who developed the first respiratory therapy education program in Utah. She has been the best friend and mentor a daughter could have. I share Christinas dedication to the students and practitioners of our profession.
Georgine Bills
I dedicate this book to my husband Tim and my two children, Sabrina and Sam, who are always there to give me infinite love and support. I also dedicate this book to the students and respiratory care professionals who share a passion for learning, challenge me, educate me, and are dedicated to providing excellent care to all their patients.

Preface

T he respiratory care professional has a broad scope of practice caring for outpatients as well as hospitalized patients with respiratory diseases and assisting with critical care procedures. One invaluable role of the respiratory therapist (RT) is to administer and educate patients on aerosolized and systemic medications used in the treatment of respiratory diseases and other therapies affecting the cardiopulmonary system. RTs will also monitor the effectiveness and recommend alternative therapies for these conditions. It is imperative for these professionals to understand the role of cardiopulmonary-targeted medication therapies and the mechanism of action of the drugs used in the treatment of the conditions they are treating.
