Anatomical guide leverages exceptional dissection images to elucidate the biomechanics of the hand and upper extremity

The hand is a unique instrument that executes the commands of the brain and expresses the nuances of the mind. The Grasping Hand: Structural and Functional Anatomy of the Hand and Upper Extremity by Amit Gupta and Makoto Tamai is a state-of-the-art book that details the functions of the hand to feel, receive, gather, collect and hold, as well as the complex role that the whole upper extremity plays in enabling these actions. The anatomical structures intrinsic to these functions are detailed through illuminating cadaveric dissections and succinct text.

Organized in 5 sections and 38 chapters, the book begins with a chapter detailing the intriguing history of hand anatomy, followed by a section encompassing the structural and functional fundamentals. The third section covers general anatomy and function, with discussions of the nerves and vascularity of the upper extremity, as well as the brachial plexus. The fourth section features 26 anatomically organized chapters from the shoulder to the fingertip with anatomical and functional insights on the joints, fascia and retinacula, interosseus membrane, tendons and more. The single chapter comprising the final section covers imaging and anatomy.

This book is dedicated to our teachers, our gurus, Dr Harold E. Kleinert and Dr Robert D. Acland, who ingrained in us the love for anatomy of the hand.

Dr. Harold E. Kleinert (October 7, 1921 September 28, 2013)

Dr. Harold Kleinert taught us anatomy and hand surgery. But he taught us much more than that. He taught us the value of hard work, humility, true patient care, humanity, patience, and perseverance. His advice for all his students was be able, be amiable, and be available for the patient.

Dr. Robert D. Acland (June 20, 1941 January 6, 2016)

Dr. Robert Acland had two famous sayings that have affected our thinking deeply. The first is Preparation is the only shortcut you will ever need.

The second is The anatomical structures are under no moral obligation to be where you think they should be. They are where they are.

The first emphasizes the importance of planning in surgical procedures. The second outlines the importance of anatomical knowledge, especially the appreciation of anatomical variability.

To these two giants, we dedicate this book, The Grasping Hand.

An ancient Sanskrit prayer for all teachers and students.

May the supreme Lord bless the teacher and the student May He nourish and - photo 2

May the supreme Lord bless the teacher and the student,
May He nourish and protect us,
May we work together with energy and vigor,
And may our studies be enlightening and free from all misunderstandings.
Peace, peace, peace.

Foreword

It is an honor that Dr. Amit Gupta and Dr. Makoto Tamai have invited us, the Zancolli family, to write the foreword for this amazing book The Grasping Hand: Structural and Functional Anatomy of the Hand and Upper Extremity.

This is the first time that three generations of hand surgeons, who are so passionate about what they do, have been invited to write a foreword together.

Since the Renaissance, the moment when humans over-came the obscurantism of the Middle Ages, anatomy has been the focus of many brilliant minds.
