Charlie Brown had a whole gang of people who helped him play the game of life. I have been blessed with so many wonderful people who help me field balls, who pinch hit when I need it, and coach me into home plate.
The Coaches: I first thank God, who keeps me in the game and drafted me in the first place. I am grateful to Edith Kaplan, Marsel Mesulam, the work of the great Norman Geschwind, Deepak Pandya, and Marney Naeser, whose ideas and words have shaped what I know about the brain.
I am thankful to the staff of P6, Dr. George McNeil, Dr. Gerry Robinson, Mary Romano-Liberty, Diane Boyce, the work of Marsha Linehan, Patrice Roy, and the MMC library, especially May Ann Lamont, for helping to teach me how to take what I know about the brain and ground it in psychiatry. I am grateful to Dr. Heather McClelland for great, honest, plain English phone conversations about neuropsychology and other things.
I am grateful to Dr. Satya Ambrose, Dr. Ted Kaptchuk, and Dr. Dan Bensky for teaching me so much about traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, and Chinese herbs.
I want to acknowledge the contributions of Edgar Cayce, Caroline Myss, Louise Hay, Winter Robinson, Teresa Moreira, the curandera, and others who helped shape the field of medical intuition and who all continue to inspire me every day.
The Team: I am grateful to Muriel Nellis, who helped me start this book in the first place. Thanks to Lisa Gorman, my Jewish godmother, for teaching me how to fund-raise and for giving me the Mont Blanc pen (among other things) with which I wrote this entire book on three-by-five-inch Post-it notes scotch-taped together. Thanks to Karen Kinne for taking my chicken scratch handwritten notes and translating them into a typed manuscript. You are one of Maines great treasures. Thank you to Scott Leighton for expert graphic support. Then, of course, there is the greatest coach in the world, Leslie Meredith, senior editor at Free Press/Simon & Schuster, smart, quick, and open-minded. I am so thankful for being able to work with such a legend in publishing.
To the team at William Morris, including Cara Stein, Jennifer Rudolph-Walsh, and Joni Evans, for helping me to get in the left-hand lane. Thanks to Reid Tracy, Jill Kramer, and the staff at Hay House for supporting my work and for being a revolutionary in the publishing industry. Thank you to Naomi Judd for being a loving and supportive career coach and southern godmother who always is on hand with Kool-aid, Diet Rite, and great advice. You are truly an inspiration.
The Clubhouse: Thanks to Harraseeket Inn in Freeport, Maine, for the greatest five-star fast food. To Rhonda, the bartender, for serving up those stiff Diet Cokes daily, putting the TV on CNN, and understanding my peculiar affection for The Boston Herald , ketchup, chocolate ice cream, bananas, and peanut butter; Mary-Anne, Pierre, and all the other chefs; Peggy and Denise, the waitresses; Chip and Nancy Gray, the owners, all create a place where everyone always knows your name. If it werent for you, Id be doing drive-thru.
Thanks to John Carpenter, for legal work when things are going well, and to Marshall Bellovin, Kate Debevoise, and Ben Campo at Drummond and Drummond, when they dont. In gratitude to Stacy, your travel expert, for getting me bulkhead seats and understanding the frequent schedule changes; to Stacie, for the great cut, and Jen at Kiowa for the great color. Thank you to Ashley, whos brilliant, talented, and classy; your tireless work to improve yourself and the planet is an inspiration. To Joseph Saucier, at Escada, for rehabilitating my clothing personality, introducing me to sequins, and showing me the sales rack.
I am in deep gratitude to Laura Day (The Real Thing) for being my NYC business yenta, intuitive colleague, confidant, and email pen pal.
Why am I thankful for Wy and Roach? I treasure the long bus rides on the road, the antics in the hotel suites, and the general ADHD merriment we have. I love you guys! I am grateful to Bill Goddard for helping me with insurance and not yelling at me for totaling that rental car in the flash flood in Nashville. I also appreciate Jenny Adams, my southern Yoda. Thanks to Gil Levin, of the Cape Cod Institute, for inviting me to teach each summer, and giving me that great house on the ocean so I can spend a week with my friends, family, and a bunch of drag queens.
Thanks to the TV people: Thanks to Becker Entertainment and 480 Digital. Mikie, the casting person, youre a TV yenta. Thank you to Judge Judy and Judge Hatchett for being a daily, daytime TV inspiration and keeping it real.
Thanks to Sue Abel, for keeping it clean; Mike Brewer, for keeping it mowed and plowed; and the two musketeers Pedro and Paulo for keeping it balanced. I am in gratitude to Paul Glazer, for putting up the steel girders in my spine; to Deb Merrill, for helping me walk upright; and to the great and powerful Fern Tsao, for rearranging my meridians. You help keep me in the game... if it werent for you, Id be out on waivers.
The Front Office: I am in gratitude to Noah Levy, a combination personal assistant, stylist, and all-around mensch. I can always depend on you for great food, company, advice, gossip, and getting front-row tickets to Joan Rivers. Thanks to Lizette, my Portuguese hair stylist and Feng Shui master, whos got a great big heart. I am grateful to Paulina for being a calming presence during my not-so-calm clinics. Thank you to Diane What-A-Babe Grover for lunches, scheduling, and occasional clandestine activities.
I am deeply grateful to Chris Northrup for being a wonderful mentor, colleague, friend, and angel. She pushes me when I need it and tolerates my unique driving habits. I cherish the lunches, the intellectual conversations, shopping expeditions, movies, and road trips (even the time the limo burned to the ground). I have laughed, cried, and learned so much. Thank you. Then there is Siggy, the receptionist, Dolly and Molly in the secretarial pool, Oscar, who does billing, and Francine and Buddy in the mail room. You make me human.
