CONTENTS
Foreword
by Dr. Gary S. Beaufield, M.D.
B oomers beware, the tsunami is coming!
Unfortunately, this statement is a statistical fact, not just some attention-grabbing headlineat least as it pertains to Alzheimers disease. An unintended consequence of the advances being made in modern medicine is that people are living longer. And, at least in Western society, waistlines are expanding.
Conditions are ripe for exponential growth in the prevalence of all kinds of degenerative diseases, including dementia, and its star variantAlzheimers disease. And no group in human history is going to be as adversely affected by this disease as the Baby Boomer generation.
I have known Dr. Honda professionally for many years. She is aware of my background in the Nutritional Sciences, in that prior to receiving my M.D. degree, I received an undergraduate degree in biochemistry and human nutrition. This is, I suspect, the main reason I was approached to provide a foreword to the latest in her series of nutrition and lifestyle books.
What she was unaware of at the time was that my father died of this horrible disease and that I strongly suspected my motherthough undiagnosedhad multi-infarct dementia before she died of other causes. Needless to say, my interest in dementia and its forms is not solely academic. In over 30 years of clinical practice, I have witnessed scores of patients ravaged by this disease. Previously vibrant human beings reduced to near vegetative states. Families left heartbroken and frustrated at seeing their loved ones deteriorate before their eyes, while the medical community stands by, powerless to help, other than offering supportive measures. In truth, our current crop of pharmacological agents can provide no more than a few months respite before the disease takes its natural, unalterable course.
While all of this does sound a bit desperate and depressing, the purpose of this book is to illuminate the role that lifestyleespecially diet, exercise, proper sleep and nutraceuticalscan play in reducing and perhaps reversing ones personal risk of developing this disease. Indeed, it is prevention that has the highest potential to alter the otherwise grim statistics. In this book, Dr. Honda provides the very latest research and recommendations from the perspective of a respected Nutritional Scientist. Her background is one of impeccable credentials, having obtained a doctorate in Nutritional Science from a well-respected university, as well as years of patient contact in her private practice. She brings her passion, knowledge and experience to every page of this informative book.
As a physician, most of us agree on the importance of lifestyle in the genesis of disease processes; however, as a group we do a poor job communicating this to our patients. This is partially due to inadequate training, time constraints and a prevailing focus on disease treatment as opposed to prevention. Fortunately, going forward we have already seen definite and purposeful movement towards a team approach to the provision of medical care, one that recognizes the vital role of our colleagues in the nutritional and mental health sciences in offering the most comprehensive care possible.
Scientific research may one day find the Holy Grail of medicine, the magic pill that will cure this most unforgiving and indiscriminate spectrum of diseases. Until that time, it is my sincere belief that the information in this book is our best hope to stem the tide of the approaching statistical tsunami.

Preface
M ost would agree that the natural process of aging is one which is accompanied by several structural and metabolic changeschanges not just in the brain, but throughout the whole of the body. Many would also expect certain health risk factors to heighten as we advance in years.
Unfortunately, as we come to expect certain outcomes as inevitableor worse, naturalwe leave ourselves little room for the prevention of known risk factors. These are the healthcare myths that need to be deprogrammed!
We live in a time where millions of people of all ages are battling brain impairment, a health care crisis of epidemic proportions. Due to structural changes in the brain that worsen as we age, cognitive decline becomes more pronounced, resulting in conditions like dementia and Alzheimers disease. There are also newcomers, as well, such as type-3 diabetes, itself another form of Alzheimers disease.
In the past decade, the number of Alzheimers patients has skyrocketed, increasing by a whopping 71 percent. Sadly, many people facing this disease are told there is very little that can be done, that there is no cure.
Our goal is clear. We must seek nothing less than a complete return to a healthy mental state. We must work towards being able to return loved ones to their families, and to their proper level of cognition. It is for this reason that I wrote this book. In it, I have assembled new therapies and protocols from decades of research to help change your future and that of your family forever.
Just as stressful as the disease itself are the deep emotional complications associated with Alzheimers, which further complicate the sort of day-to-day physical changes that require constant supervision. This journey, walking the path to reversing Alzheimers and regaining your health, will therefore include dealing with important decisions on how to maintain your own mental acuity.
The reversal process of all aspects of mental insufficiency, including Alzheimers conditions, is fully described in this book. The protocols I provide are safe and effective, with proven positive outcomes that many see within a short time of starting treatment. We also take you through the traditional medical world and why their recommendations have only limited effectiveness.
