Aboutthe author
David qualified as aPolymer Chemist, rubbed shoulders with those far more qualified, and had no endof chemical experiments go wrong. Some caught fire, with some colleagues andhimself sustaining injuries, thankfully just minor family abrasions. After oneor two damaged pieces of expensive laboratory equipment, he decided to take apromotion into the commercial world, away from chemicals, experiments and immediatedanger (to those around him, that is).
After a fast tracktraining programme, he stayed content in the commercial world, leaving behindthis trail of destruction. Suddenly, he was free to let loose on clients, suppliers and businesses, making a career out of chemistry in the businessworld.
One thing is certain, mistakes can be good, providing no one was injured along the way. Learningsfrom these mistakes can be applied to future learnings, and to improve ones skills, knowledge and abilities.
As a Leader, David hasbeen in the Sunday Times Top 100 Companies to work for several times. Heis passionate about people engagement, building teams and helping people succeedin their careers.
David thrives on businesschallenges, favouring companies that are in need of a positive turnaround, aparticular fix or organisational transformation.
The book was writtenafter David sold a Company in December 2016, having led its turnaround fromdisaster to success. In this book, David hopes to share some of his experienceswith others, adding a little light entertainment along the way through his ownstyle of storytelling.
This chapter of lifefollows several other business turnarounds, resulting in a culmination ofexperiences and knowledge. In the pages that follow, David has pieced togethersome common threads, things he observed and experienced throughout each turnaround, and knitted these together to form a colourful and interwoven pattern of shortsections designed to be bite-sized, digestible chunks of meaty experience tonourish the brain, provoke thought and stimulate ideas.
Thank you from theauthor
The book is dedicated toThomas and Alice, my two younger children, who keep me young at heart, poor ofpocket and thankful for choosing to have a good work-life balance, which I putright after recovering from meningitis in 2010.
This book is aboutbusiness, making business a success and the challenges that this presents alongthe way.
It is written in the hopeof helping managers move into effective and successful Leadership roles, whichcan be both a tough and rewarding journey.
Thank you for choosing toread this. I hope you love it, share it, learn from it and, possibly, relate toit.
Enjoy.
So,whats your strategy?
So, whats yourstrategy? I have lost count of the number of times people have asked thisquestion when they realised I had turned around and helped several businesses.
My glib response, even inan interview, appears a little arrogant, What do you mean? In return, theyask, You know, whats the key to your success? The one thing that made ithappen.
During the interview, notsurprisingly, I was expecting the uneducated question, the interviewer lookingfor the opportunity to shortcut years of experience with a silver bullet of aresponse. I am incredulous that they truly believe that turning a business fromfailure to success is reliant on one aspect alone. The confidence in the question, suggesting that success is quick or easy, is almost offensive.
Can it be that easy? Canone create a fast turnaround in the case of a broken or damaged business? Ormust it be complex and verging on the impossible? Thankfully, I have done this,so it cannot be impossible. But, I can honestly state that it is never easy.
Nor is it dependent onmyself alone. This requires team effort, everyone pulling together and workingtowards the same goal. Making sure the team works well together is ultra-important.
Essentially, anyoneseeking a one phrase answer will be disappointed. So, what was my response?
Well, imagine the interviewergetting more than they expected during the meeting. A one phrase answer ispossible, but it would not be a polite one.
I do not wish to appearrude to anyone. As with life, a business is complex. A question needs togenerate a wider response, and give it the space it deserves.
My answer can be explainedin a variety of ways: relayed via my own stories and through my experiencesbased on real events, quotes and interactions with people, some of whom are farmore intelligent than I could ever hope to be. I will break this down in thepages that follow.
Themagic formula
Business challenges fallinto similar categories, which are usually specific to the business inquestion, regardless of its industry. Rarely does the opportunity arise whereone can simply copy and paste exact strategies from one business to another. Recently, someone asked, You must have a template to put in place by now? Like a recipe, something the next person can copy and replicate to get a guaranteed outcome. Ah,like a cake mix with instructions? I returned.
As a qualified researchchemist, repetition of basic processes is something I am quite familiar with, adopting minor variances along the way to achieve the desired outcome. Creatinga business turnaround template is not quite the same thing, and it is not aneasy task. If it were, surely someone far more enterprising than myself wouldhave patented it by now, and retired early with the respect of thousands offans, along with the admiration and lifelong friendship of their wealthadviser.
In my IT business, one ofthe core messages to our clients is that, regardless of size, sector orgeographic location, businesses face similar challenges. These types ofchallenges can be overcome with technical solutions, which has proven to be thecase.
Every business, howeversimilar on the surface, is unique. Its turnaround journey will differ from thenext. However, there is a major variable, one that cannot be predicted infinite terms. Something integral but often ignored in the aspect of businessturnaround: its people.
Every section in thisbook will focus on people in some form or another. I make no excuses for thisoverlap, repetition or predictability.
So, no shockannouncements. In the sections that follow, there will be a strong emphasis onthe importance of people as it is these people who represent the biggestvariable and highest common denominator, combined.
I typically liken a Companyto the shape of a hand please dont be alarmed, put the book back or ask fora refund just yet! The five digits represent five typical functions, and thepalm represents the people who hold everything together, without which the functionscould not exist.
The role of the Leader isoften misinterpreted, with most Leaders operating as specialists in one of the fivemain functional areas, rather than specialising in Leadership itself. Inreality, this is a role that requires its own focus, as we will go on to explore.
The Leader is responsiblefor pulling all the functions together, revolving around the people who makethe function happen. However, not everyone is perfectly suited to their function. This Leadership responsibility alone is a skill in itself. A skill that can be learnt.Although, being passionate about staff engagement is something that must befelt, believed in and practiced every day. It is not something that can betaught. I look forward to explaining this further as we go along, in my ownstrange, quirky style, and through real life stories.
