This book is dedicated to women everywhere.
You run the world!
I m inspired by women every day of my life. They make me laugh and think and challenge me to be a better human. The inspiration all started with my mom, a powerhouse who always encouraged me to be myself. It continued with Lucy, who not only entertained me on TV, but (as youll read on October 15) provided me great inspiration in the form of a well-worn library book that had my mother worried I was an airhead (spoiler alert: I was). From there I moved on to the majesty of Diana Ross, who was like a Diva-Superhero, then Madonna, whose music took me to the moon and attitude rocked my soul, and a galaxy of other female icons in the world of entertainment, who dazzled and delighted me. Most of my mentors in my career have been women, and theyve seemed to get me in a way that others havent. And then there are the Real Housewives, who give me the daily drama and laughs Ive grown to depend on; and without them, I wouldnt be half the man I am today (or have half my gray hair).
My goal with this book is to provide you with a daily meditation unlike those you might find in other books of actual daily meditations. I can guarantee that this is a group of women you wont find bundled in any other place, but their quotes will hopefully make you inspired, amused, shocked, think about something differently, or just shake your cage!
Think of each quote as a sparkly cloud of glitter, sprinkled freshly onto each new day!
Get a hold of yourself, Andy!
Evelyn Cohen
W henever my mom says this to me, its like a slap of reality in my face. This chestnut has been used for years in especially heated moments when she thinks Im doing something very stupid. Spending too much on needless trifles? Get a hold of yourself, Andy! Not going to the doctor when Im clearly sick? Get a hold of yourself, Andy! Living on caffeine and five hours sleep? Get a hold of yourself, Andy! Sometimes we all just need a metaphorical slap in the face from our mothers to take stock and get a hold of ourselves!
- On the first day of the year, its important to listen to your mother!
Everything is right on time.
Hoda Kotb
I remember pulling Hoda aside at Sirius one day, confiding that Ben was on his way. Hodes was an immediate calming burst of enthusiasm and guiding force when we discussed having kids later in life. She completely put me at ease about every stress running through my mind. Everything is right on time, indeed.
- Hoda Kotb was named the co-anchor of Today on this date in 2018.
The man who gets me is getting one hell of a woman.
Aretha Franklin
A retha knew she was a prize and acted like one until the day she died. Self-worth is so powerful and one of the greatest things we can pass on to our kids, and Im praying mine walk through life the way Aretha did.
- On this date in 1987, Aretha Franklin became the first woman ever inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
The fact that I can reproduce is very scary.
Nicole Snooki Polizzi
T h e fact that Snooki is so self-aware made me less scared about her having kids.
- Snookis first book (she has three!!), A Shore Thing, was published on January 4, 2011.
But how will you know when to wipe me?
Kelly Ripa
I played a game on Watch What Happens Live with Anderson Cooper, Ripa, and all of our assistants. This was Kellys response after her assistant said her grossest habit is going to the bathroom with the door open, and it made me laugh for days after she said it. She is so fast and funny, and I love how dirty she gets in my Clubhouse.
- Kelly Ripas last appearance on All My Children as Hayley Vaughan aired on this day in 2010, when she returned for the series fortieth anniversary.
I regard Real Housewives as anthropological documents.
Camille Paglia
S o do I, Camille Paglia! Ive been saying for years that the show is like a sociological time capsule of how a certain group of women lived and interacted in different cities. Someday, in a galaxy far, far away, people are going to study this, Im convinced!
- On January 6, 2017, Camille Paglia published the scathing essay on show business How to Age Disgracefully in Hollywood, trumpeting how to age with grace and class without all the Botox and filler. But do that, too, if it makes you feel good.
Everybodys a little bi.
Sandra Bernhard
S andyalways a trailblazer, artistically and personallysaid this on Arsenio Hall in 1992. Her freedom in expressing her sexuality in that era opened a lot of peoples minds.
- Today is a good day to explore your bisexuality!
I dont apologize because I never make mistakes.
Tiffany New York Pollard
T h is would be such a brilliant Housewives tagline, and its the perfect attitude for any reality starunrepentant narcissism in full bloom!
- I Love New York premiered on VH1 on January 8, 2007.
Ive always walked around and noticed things and other people also used to notice things, but then everyone but me got a phone and so now everyone is just looking at the phone and theyve bequeathed the entire city to me.
Fran Lebowitz
P hones suck, and theyre going to kill us all, one way or another. And Fran is lucky to not be involved in any of these phone shenanigans. In summary, these phones are going to kill us all. Im sorry to ruin your day.
- Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs announced the iPhone on this date in 2007.
I. Love. Bread. I love bread. I now just manage it so I dont deny myself bread. I have bread every day. I have bread every day!
Oprah Winfrey
O prah loves bread! Do you hear me!? Oprah. Loves. Bread. She has it every day!
- On this date in 2018, Oprah gave a speech at the Golden Globes that began a short-lived movement to get her to run for president.
The more you live, the less you die.
Janis Joplin
W hile I dont advocate overdosing at the age of twenty-seven, I think Joplin makes a great point. This is one of the reasons I moved to New York City: to live. I always appreciate the idea that anyone could drop by at any time, or I might be summoned for a late-night drink by a friend who happens to be in the neighborhood.
Living > Sleep
- Janis Joplins second and final solo studio album, Pearl, was released posthumously on January 11, 1971.
