1. Introduction to the Liver Cleansing Diet

Many people struggle with excessive weight and sluggish metabolism all their lives and find that as they age they gradually gain more weight and become resigned to a large protruding abdomen and stubborn fat deposits.

After years of going from one fad diet to the next, which leads them on a yo-yo journey to ever increasing weight and frustration, they become resigned to the misconception that nothing can ever possibly lead to lasting relief for them.

There is obviously something wrong, a missing key or link, and yet although we have the Internet, sophisticated global satellite navigation systems, babies for postmenopausal women, genetic engineering and other mind boggling achievements, it seems even more mind boggling that someone has not said, Hey, why do we have all these overweight, unhappy and unhealthy people who cannot find a solution? In life, real solutions are generally simple (not simplistic) and they are logical and practical. They must also be easy to follow, otherwise we will fall by the wayside and they are thrown into the too hard basket!

I must admit it took me more than twenty years of medical practice before the - photo 2

I must admit it took me more than twenty years of medical practice before the solution dawned on me! The liver, the supreme organ of metabolism had to be the missing key. It seemed so simple and obvious and yet so incredible; why hadnt someone thought of this before?

Perhaps it was not obvious to most doctors because with modern-day medicine we have become side-tracked into treating the symptoms of disease and not its causes. Excessive weight is often a symptom of liver dysfunction and not solely due to the number of calories you eat. We have been attacking the symptom of weight excess with fad diets, obsessive high-impact aerobic exercise, stomach stapling, gastric banding and toxic drugs such as appetite suppressants, laxatives, and diuretics. Meanwhile we have failed to treat the underlying cause of liver dysfunction and indeed we have managed to virtually ignore the hardest working organ in the body, with dire consequences. As you will discover in this book the consequences of mistreating the liver are not only obesity, but a higher incidence of cardiovascular and degenerative diseases that are the scourge of modern-day affluent societies.

I had seen more than 30,000 patients, many of whom had struggled with excess weight and sluggish metabolism, and yet it was not until 1994 that I decided to treat these difficult cases with a program to improve liver function. This strategy seemed so obvious that I could have kicked myself for taking so long, and yet I also felt a great sense of relief, as I knew that from now on my work would be much easier and more productive. I felt a sense of urgency to bring relief to my patients and to document my new discovery. This I have been doing for over a decade and my theory that the liver holds the key to weight control has been vindicated in many thousands of patients that I have treated with my program to improve liver function. The success rate, as measured by parameters of weight loss, general well-being and various types of liver function tests, has been over 90 per cent in the patients I have been able to see regularly for monitoring. The others, who live too far away to follow up myself, are being monitored by correspondence, and provided they continue to apply the principles of the Liver Cleansing Diet they should be able to match the results that I am getting with my own regular patients. I have included some of the more interesting case histories of some success stories for you in this book, as this will inspire and motivate you. In Sydney Australia we have done a clinical study of patients with fatty liver disease and excess weight to see our excellent results visit www.liverdoctor.com
