I dedicate this book to the man who taught me obstetric semiotics, Professor Vincenzo Traina, and to the President of GVM Care & Research, Ettore Sansavini, who has continued to contribute to the development of the Santa Maria Hospital, and currently with the contribution of Doctor Eleonara Sansavini and Professor Giuseppe Speziale continues to feed the flame of the new life in the prestigious Department of Obstetrics of the Santa Maria Hospital.

Preface

This book is the second edition of the book Intrapartum Ultrasonography for Labor Management published in 2012 by Springer.

Since then, intrapartum ultrasound has spread around the world and many studies have been published on this topic, so I felt it was useful to prepare a second edition expanding the concept of intrapartum ultrasound to labor, delivery, and puerperium.

Furthermore, this second edition integrates the classical semiotics of labor, delivery, and puerperium with the ultrasound semiotics. Modern obstetric semiotics must consider intrapartum ultrasonography, which can represent a diagnostic support that improves classical semiotics.

This book describes and illustrates how intrapartum ultrasonography improves the diagnosis of childbirth, especially in the case of fetal malpresentations, and through an objective photographic documentation of dystocias, which is useful evidence in case of legal medical disputes.

The final goal of this book is a modern revision of labor delivery and puerperium also through the use of ultrasound, on which the worlds leading experts have collaborated and contributed.

My desire and my dream, however ambitious it may seem, is to offer a useful tool to all those who work in the event of birth to improve the health of women and their children.
