The book tells the story of Ontarios punk movement in the words of the players, often in shockingly lurid and graphic detail. Its the straight goods, no holds barred.
Being a huge champion of Toronto punk rock and the untold story of its origins, I thought it was great to read a lot of stuff that I knew but also tons that I didnt: the inception of bands from Simply Saucer to the Viletones to the Diodes. Its a really fun read.
If you want to know where Canadian alt-rock came from, you need to read this.
An incredible document of a self-contained world.
This book, seriously, you will not be able to put down.
Like most oral histories worth their salt, Worths book is informative and a great historical document on bands like the Diodes, Teenage Head, Simply Saucer and the Viletones, and clubs like the Crash n Burn. But its her ability to step aside and let the characters tell their own stories that gives the book a true sense of time and place.
Treat Me Like Dirt is Canadas answer to Please Kill Me ... but what the book lacks in names youve heard of, it makes up for with a good share of dropping acid and going to get a VD test on Halloween, bands storming the stage and stealing each others instruments, heroin, forced electro-shock treatments, biker attacks, venues being burned to the ground, riots, full-body casts due to car crashes, women peeing in jukeboxes, gangs...
This is the finest oral history of one punk scene Ive ever seen. A regional document, it lacks the span (and name recognition) of the three U.S.-wide giants of that era, what led up to it, and what followed, from the Velvets to the Voidoids, Please Kill Me, and Our Band Could Be Your Life. But with vivid storytelling from nearly every participant in the Toronto (and Hamilton) punk explosion, its equal in quality and interest to those essential tomes.
